Hi all..I just bought a 1997 190 BR and took it for a spin this morning but I am confused on my power tilt/trim options.

Power Tilt...when I press this button the stern drive goes down and shows about 1/2 way on the trim gauge...when I press it again nothing happens

Power Trim...when I press down the drive goes down further...but when I trim up the stern drive goes back to about 1/2 way on gauge and for me to pull the setrn all the way up I have to press the Trailer Trim (Power Tilt) switch.

Is it supposed to work like this ? Just seems odd that when I press the UP on trim switch :?: the trim would go all the way up ...not 1/2 way on tht gauge.

Anyone any thought ? Many thanks...JB

Sorry, had a hard time following that.

Trailer button – the big square one. Should do one thing and one thing only. When you press it the lower unit will move up. As long as you press it the lower unit will keep coming up until it reaches its maximum position.

Trim button – should be a two way type of button. Push it down and the unit will go all the way down. Push it up and it will let the unit come up as far as it should come in the water unless you are going to pull it out of the water.

Trim gauge – these things get off very easy. Easy to adjust with one friend in the water and one on the boat. Put the lower unit all the way down. On the right side of the lower unit is a plastic piece. Its on the part that moves up and down but close to the top.

It has a spot for a screwdriver and you can see if loosened you can turn it. If you are on the correct screw you don’t take the two screws all the way out, only loosen them. Next turn it one way then the next until the person on the boat says the gauge is reading the unit is all the way down. Now tighten the screws.

If you are past the range of adjustment you can open this unit by removing the other screws and take the plastic part on the inside and turn it one click. I cant remember if you turn it right or left, but if you do and its off worse you went the wrong way.

Let us know what happens and welcome to boating.

the trim does only go so far up when using the trim button, this is called trim limit, the outdrive should not be run any higher than this or damage can result from the u joints being in a bind.
the trailer button is just that....... raises the drive all the way when you load it on the trailer to tow.
