On my 175, I used the Ritchie Sport compass, that you can see at this link:

And in this photo of my boat shown below. I thought it was small and had a good fit for the smaller boat (gray kinda matched the gray bezel of my guages). A boat without a compass doesn't make any sense to me, no matter the size. Only issue...after about two years, the clear plastic bezel started to break!? It now looks like I had the compass full of water and let it freeze. It shattered all around, but has not come apart. Makes it pretty difficult to actually see.

I like that dashmount.... and would like to fill the blank in my 185 with the same thing...

That should work just fine. Good idea. But that depth gauge is pretty important! I'd make room for that first.
Metal won't hurt the compass. It's magnets you have to worry about.

I did fill my blank with a depth gauge (same model as factory) but used a shoot-through transducer and wasn't happy with the performance of it.... so then added a garmin GPS with transom mount transducer (which I'm happy with)... so now I can remove the depth dash depth gauge 
and this compass looks like a useful device for that spot.

isn't there a compass on the gps? why do you need to add something else?
