Hi, chatting to a dealer over here in Australia who said that Sea Ray wont be making the 175 any more. Is this true? What's the go? They have always done a smaller boat from the 160 back in the late 80's to the 175 now. Very popular over here in Aus. Seems strange to me.

I never did understand the reason for both a 175 and a 3.0L version of the 185. When I bought my 175, I measured both the bow area and the main seating area and there was essentially no meaningful size difference. The extended swim platform on the 185 is where I found the extra inches.

Yes. The pricing between the 175 & 185 was pretty close and the 185 vastly outsold the 175.

What Sea Ray decides to build and sell has nothing to do with Bayliner and vice versa.

Wasn't the 175 (and only the 175) built in a Bayliner plant in Mexico though? I seem to recall being told that by a dealer but have never looked at the Hull ID on one. If so it could be related to a re-org of that plant.

No, the 175 was not. Or, at least if it was, that would be news to me. Any of the ones we ever had always came from American plants.

I deleted my second comment, above, just to keep things simple. That topic has come up a few times before and I didn't want the thread to get hijacked. You must of saw my comment within the 2 minutes it took me to go back in and change it!:smt001

Boating in Australia must not be for the faint of heart! This thread made me wander a bit, and look at a Queensland boat dealer inventory. I was impressed by the degree that the inventory looked a bit like a U.S. Showroom. At least something is still made in the U.S. But the prices! Ouch! I found a 2005 Sport 200, the predecessor of my 2006 205 Sport, listed for $45,950. A website that converts dollars says that is $46,987 in U.S. dollars. Granted the AU boat is loaded with 5.0 MPI, tower and high end stereo, but NO trailer. You can walk into my dealer, and find a new 2010 leftover 4.3 MPI, tower and more with MSRP of $46,000, asking $35,000, trailer included. I paid well under $25K for my creampuff 2006 model with trailer. Adjusting against my boat and adding the MPI, tower and stereo, subtracting for one model year, slightly more hours, and outdoor storage, and lack of trailer, this boat should be under USD $25,000 here in the U.S.

Yep, boats here in Aus are way over priced compared to the US. Partly down to the exchange rate, partly down to a smaller customer base but apart from that its hard to explain. A lot of people are importing boats from the US but this option comes with spending money on shipping, import duties, GST (tax) and also adjusting the trailers to be legal here. For a $30 - $40k boat it doesnt add up but its becoming popular to do so. Hopefully it will drive dealer prices down here.

Ref: Sea Ray and Bayliner, I was also told by a dealer that Maxum were dropping their 180MX model (175 size). I get mixed opinions from dealers on whether they share hulls (all being Brunswick owned) but yes, it seems they are leaving the smaller boat manufacturing to Binlin... sorry, Bayliner.

We actually do a decent amount of business shipping boats out of the country to areas where there is no Sea Ray dealer. We got set up a number of years back with an importer and he calls us every so often and says "I need "x" boat for a customer". The shipping yard we use is only about 3 hours away, so it works out well.

I asked our GM at the store and he was sure they were never made in Mexico. I "think" it was only the small Bayliner that was made there, but that I definitely am not sure of.

I am 100% sure that Bayliner and Sea Ray do not share hulls. Sea Ray people build Sea Ray boats and Bayliner people build Bayliner boats. Nor do they share things such as vinyl, seat foam, canvas, etc, etc.
