I didn't want to hijack the other thread so I made a part 2. I also have a issue with a 12 receptacle not working. It's in a 2000 290 DA. I have 2 receptacles, one at the helm and one under the stereo in cabin. The cabin is the one that isn't working. It's labeled 590 and I've traced the wire back to the bilge. I loose it in the bilge and cannot find where it gets power. I have no tripped 12 volt breakers.
I have looked behind 12 volt power breakers in port side stern, breaker/switch panel in cabin and scoured the bilge looking for where power would come from.
I got nothing. Any help would be great.

Thanks, Russ

For ease, I would find another 12V power source close to the plug that does not work. Hook to it, put an in line fuse, and call it fixed.

If you look in your manual (or download it), you may be able to trace it that way. If you download it, print out the pages - I find it's easier to look at it that way, rather than constantly moving around on the screen.

Does your boat have another fuse/breaker panel under the helm? There would be a small trap door.

You may find that the receptacle is not labelled receptacle at a panel - it may just be "accessory".

Check for voltage on the backside of the receptacle. If none, and all breaker/fuse panels look A-OK, check for continuity to ground and/or jump to ground from the receptacle and re-check for voltage. If you verify that the ground is good, you can get back to looking at the supply side.

Bahamabreisus, that's exactly what I did but I don't like having a "hot" wire somewhere in my wiring harness not producing as it should. Also, it is supposed to be coming from the same source my trim tabs come from.

Lazy Daxe, thanks for the reply and all the help you offer to the folks on this site. You are an indispensable asset to all us DIYer's.
I've determined it is not a ground and I have the schematic that shows the power comes from "CAP 8 BILGE HARNESS SHEET 3". I have no idea where that is. The other that has me stumped is power for the trim tabs comes from the bus bar you mentioned under the helm. But for the life of me, I cannot find the origin of wire #590 that goes to my 12 volt receptacle in my cabin. The helm 12 volt receptacle originates at the helm bus bar.
I have currently looked at the connections for the 12 volt breakers in cabin, under helm, in bilge (can't find any bus bar/power origin here), 12 volt panel in port rear and both battery switches in case it was somehow hard wired. I got nothing. Any help from anyone who's done this dance would be great. Or if you know anything after more explanation above, a reply would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Russ, thanks for the kind comment! Truth is, I'm just a boater like everyone else. I just happen to also work at a dealership... to help support my "habit"!

I'm not 100% sure on this... but pull the 12V outlet that's near your dash. Is there a #590 wire there? Does it piggyback onto that receptacle? If there is, try removing it and sliding it back on a few times. The dash outlet works, right? Another thing to do (if there's a #590 wire there)... check for power at this outlet. If so, turn the power off and ohm the #590 wire from the dash outlet (remove wire from outlet) to the cabin outlet (also remove wire).

I don't know if this is going to help - but it's at leas the next step I would take, myself.

Dennis,

The one at the helm does work and comes from the bus bar under the helm but no sign of the mysterious wire #590. Also, the 12 volt receptacle in cabin is 10ga wire (#590) and the helm is more like 12-14 ga.

Russ

The wire size makes sense since the cabin receptacle's wiring has a much longer run.

Well, shoot, Russ - I thought that was going to be the ticket! When I looked through your wiring diagrams, I followed that #590, starting at the cabin receptacle, through about 4 or 5 different caps/plugs and a few pages of diagrams. Strangely enough, it ended as it went through the ignition panel. That's why I thought you might find that #590 behind the dash somewhere. Piggy-backing off the dash receptacle was just a guess at what "seemed" logical.

Dennis,

Thanks for the help. I've got a good solid 1/2 hour just under that helm looking. I'll give another 1/2 hour tearing through it. If I find it I'l let ya know.

Russ

Anytime. Good luck, Russ!

I don't think I asked this above... did you check for 12V at the back side of the plug? Or are you just plugging something in to see if it works? Since you're reading wiring diagrams and tracing circuits, I would assume you've already done that, but better to ask than not!
