Engines
Twin Cummins 6BTA's
I'm travelling to the mainland to look at an '07 290 soon. Here's the listing.
I'd like to know what real world speeds will this combination will achieve (5.0 MPI and B3's). Also, I like the look of the high bow but can you see when the boat is coming up on plane? Any other comments are most welcome.
Thanks.

I would think top speed might be 40 mph give or take. The bow rise isn't a problem.
The price seems a bit high. I would think 100,000 would be more like it.

Hmm... is that 40 mph in a lake or on the ocean? Either way, a 30 mph cruise will do.
As for the price... unfortunately, here in the pacific northwest, boats are a little more expensive and this is the only black 280 / 290 within hundreds of miles... or more.
Yes I need a black one :smt001

Works fine. Would I prefer twins? Yup. But the price was right and I'm on a lake. Performance is fine for what we do, plus engine maintence is 1/2.

Check the official thread, I may have posted some numbers previously.

Clean Hull, Potomac River, same setup My top end was 42.5, burning 36gph. I cruise around 26-28mph, burn 23-25gph.

My 290 comes up on plane pretty quick when its clean and calm, I rarely if ever use tabs. Visibility is good.

On a smooth surface (lake or river with no wind or waves), my 290 will top out at 45MPH. No problem with sight coming onto plane.

Boat cruises comfortably at 32MPH, and you will get about 1.4MPG at that speed.

Great Boat & great engine combination.

A CSR member has his 2007 290 for sale. It is a spotless boat and I think he is looking for less than $80K for it (he lives in Ohio). Let me know if you are interested, and I will have him contact you.

I bet you could buy lots of black paint for 30K......

You will always top out over 40 mph, but not over 45mph. This depends on the weight you are carrying.
The cruise speed at 3000 RPM will be about 25mph. At 3500RPM you will be right at or just over 30mph. This assumes pretty flat seas. The boat is well powered with the 5.0s.

Visibility is not a problem at the helm of this boat at any speed.

:smt001 This is true although I'd prefer gelcoat!
Even at 80k; exchanged = $83000 +/-
Cross country shipping = $3800 +/-
Taxes = $9900 +/- for a cross-border purchase. There is taxes buying locally too mind you but they're half that.
Throw in a hull and mechanical survey (from a surveyer in another country), incidentals and maybe a trip to look at it and touch it.... then add the cost of that tender, engine and mount set-up... and there's not much in the way of savings IMHO.

Thanks for your help folks, I appreciate it.

That would be me! Mine ran around 45mph at the beginning of the season before we started loading her down with all of our "live aboard" gear. Mid season with it stocked up it will run at 42. Planes out nicely but I still prefer to stand as we have a crowded lake with a bunch of people who don't know where and how to pull tubers.

I would negotiate on my price if we can make it worth your while. I too loved the black hull and wanted but can't tell you how happy I ended up with white. My weakness is that I am sooo picky about water spots etc that a black hull this big would have driven me crazy trying to keep its spotless rather then enjoying the boat. I was obssessed with my bow rider that was black and it was only 26 feet. This thing is enough work being white.

Let me know if you want to talk more. My boat looks everybit as nice as that one. Does it have a generator? Mine does.

True....
If I'm being honest...I'd probly buy a 320 if I had to do it all over....On the other hand I didn't want to spend another 50K either...
