Hey guys,

So My VHF radio broke this season, I have a new one waiting to be installed but, had another idea while I had the broken one removed. Three years ago when I purchased my boat It came with an older "Navigation".

It does not work but I just never removed or replaced it. I am thinking of mounting An IPAD mini for navigation use where the old VHF radio used to be.

Problem I am running into is I do not know where to install the new vhf radio.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Look into a 2 piece VHF (black box style).

Another option is relocate the fuel gauge to free up that space

Ipads are great as a backup navigation tool but are not meant to replace the marine chartplotter. Ipads are not water resistant and prone to overheating in direct sun. I use my Ipad with a RAM suction cup mount so it can be easily removed. I would replace the Raymarine unit and the VHF in their original locations then get a RAM type mount for the Ipad.

Two piece looks interesting. I was thinking about moving it to where the fuel gauge is. But the piece that the gauge is mounted to is very thin and if I flush mount the vhf there it will break with the first wave

im planning to keep the iPad in a water proof case and also "flushish" mount in that location with a easily removable ram mount.

Any good old chart plotter is just so expensive and I don't think I will ever put it to use. This past weekend when I got slightly confused on how to eat back to my channel. Google maps on my phone directed me better than my friends chart plotter. Although that might be because he doesn't really know how to use it.

If you are going with the VHF shown in the picture, I would mount base internal and then mount the coiled hand held in the starboard side next to the helm. This way it is out of the way when not using. I agree wi h I hers that IPad should. It be main navigation unit. Get a Garmin as they are fairly plug and play. iPad will over heat in sun light.

Glued a magnet on the side and use it to hold my iphone running my navigation app. The mount I use for the phone on my car has me put a small smooth metal plate in the case behind the phone. So the old phone locks in place right there and is kept in a water proof case. No issues so far and it makes streaming music easy as well. Its also quite clean when I don't have the phone there.

I would use a RAM mount and use the screw down base, attaching it to the left or right side of the dash (leaving the VHF center). The RAM mounts swivel. And one of the problems with tablets is they are not as bright for viewing in the sun. With a swivel mount, you will be able to move it around to a good viewing angle. RAM has many variations of parts that you can use and maybe 20 ways to configure things.
