'05 320 Prop Shaft break

Hey all. Wanted to start a new thread regarding the prop shaft break to share info and pictures. You can read about the initial problem here: http://clubsearay.com/forum/showpost.php?p=248299&postcount=25

I had the boat hauled yesterday and took some pictures. Just as i thought, and as previous people have posted, the starboard shaft broke just behind the strut. The prop put a relatively minor gouge in the hull as she broke free but missed the rudder completely as she sank to the bottom of the LI Sound. I've taken a few photos of the shaft and the break is almost perfectly clean as is i sawed through it with a hack-saw. I'll be contacting Sea Ray today to see if there are any warranties i have on the boat will cover this, or if this is a defect that maybe they will help cover. Any input from the experts is always so welcome. I'll update this thread as i get info to share knowledge gained and any tips to consider. I know at a minimum, i need a new shaft and prop. aHoy,did you get a gps location on the prop. I dive LI sound and if found I will contact you.

I’m not an expert but IMHO it looks like the shaft may have be a victim of electrolysis.
I can see pitting on your struts maybe this had impact on your shaft.

Snapping at the keyway is often a sign of a keyway that was not properly seated at the time of prop installation.
I do just about everything myself- but not installing my props. It is extremely critical that the keyway be properly seated, and the prop lapped to the shaft so that the load is distributed evenly along the keyway. If it's not perfectly seated, you end up with too much stress placed at a single point on the shaft and-snap!
