Not being an outboard guy what’s the lower unit worth? If they can prove it only has an hour on it. I know outboards are very expensive. Is the engine worth a rebuild and then worth what I would guess 5 digits?

Well, a new one is probably 25-30K or better.

You could part that out and make money at that price. $3500 doesn’t seem unreasonable if it is a good core.

When the timing belt breaks, the valves hit the pistons and it's a goner. 1000 hrs per belt and he made it 2000. I used to work on motorcycles and drink beer. Those were the days. Later, I had a big Vulcan (Kaw) with a stripped oil pump drive gear and read the instructions on splitting the cases. Insanely complicated to be done in one sitting with photos and prognosis 50% at best. Not gonna work on any Asian engine. There was an aftermarket trick gear to be installed w/o splitting which worked. I wouldn't touch a gearbox that did not come from the factory. But, I won't buy a new car with a belt versus a chain.
