Mercruiser 5.7 MPI Horizon oil change - unable to extract all the oil

My old engine, which was a 1995 Mercruiser 5.7 TBI, held 5.5 qts and I was always able to extract about 4.5 quarts using the same oil extractor. With the 2005 Mercruiser 5.7 Horizon MPI I haven't been able to extract any more than 3.5 quarts, which is why I am confused. I called Mercruiser...

Mercruiser 5.7 MPI Horizon oil change - unable to extract all the oil

I am planning on calling Mercruiser tech support to confirm, but I believe it only holds 4.5 US quarts...

Mercruiser 5.7 MPI Horizon oil change - unable to extract all the oil

I have a 2005 Mercruiser 5.7 MPI Horizon and I am using a West Marine oil extractor with a garden hose adapter, but no matter what I do I can only suck about 3 quarts out, maybe 3.5 if you count what's in the oil filter. I also tried inserting a long suction tube through the dipstick until it...

    Mercruiser water pressure sensor [Update]

I ran the boat over 50 miles yesterday and everything seems to be fine... no change in the pressure readings from what I reported previously, but I haven't had any further alarms either. Temps were fine as well. I am starting to think that as long as the ECM sees *some* pressure it is happy.

    Mercruiser water pressure sensor [Update]

UPDATE: I was able to confirm that I have LOW pressure and NORMAL flow - whatever that means First I decided to test the water pressure with my friend's lab-calibrated digital gauge, and I discovered that I indeed only have about 0.5-0.7psi of pressure at idle. I then proceeded to do a flow...

    Mercruiser water pressure sensor [Update]

I am headed to the boat armed with a second, brand new, OEM pressure sensor and a digital pressure gauge certified to be accurate to 0.015psi, which I borrowed from a friend who works at a lab. I also plan on testing the output of my sea water pump as per Mercruiser's procedure. I will post my...

twin 5.7 Horizons. 2006. Im in NJ.

About $1450 for manifolds and elbows and another $500 for spacers and gaskets...you are looking at $2k per motor if you go OEM. I have no idea how much a marina would charge to replace them, but it is a very easy DIY project that only requires a few basic tools and a torque wrench. Since the...

Can you help ID my sea water pump - something doesn't add up

In other words, my water pump housing cover looks similar to the one on the left, except mine is made from bronze. My cover is a different style as I have the air pump cylinder and air fittings, but you get the idea. I checked the catalog once again and the only part number that I can find...

    Mercruiser water pressure sensor [Update]

I couldn’t agree with you more. I feel like I am chasing a ghost because I have never had overheating issues, but I still want to investigate all possibilities. Like many other things it sounds great on paper, but in reality it doesn’t work all that well. Trust me, the first time you get stuck...

Can you help ID my sea water pump - something doesn't add up

My engine is 2005 Mercruiser 5.7 Bravo Horizon MPI, serial #0w328501. I have a bronze sea water pump with a bronze cover, but my water pump cover has a replaceable SS wear plate (part number 8M2014176). The confusion comes from the fact that I don't see the wear plate listed in the Mercruiser...

    Mercruiser water pressure sensor [Update]

Well I am getting a new sensor under warranty and I will see what the new one reads once it arrives. I also ordered another 0-15psi gauge from a different manufacturer so hopefully between the two pressure sensors and the two pressure gauges I will be able to establish some sort of a quorum. I...

    Mercruiser water pressure sensor [Update]

I don't believe it is Bravotitis because I've never had overheating issues with my previous motor and it was raw water cooled. The new to me 2005 Horizon MPI motor is fresh water cooled, and for the 2 hours that I ran it, the temps also stayed normal. I do plan on checking the flow from the sea...

    Mercruiser water pressure sensor [Update]

OK, so the plot thickens - I replaced the sensor with an OEM Mercruiser sensor, and my pressure readings are still kinda low. According to VesselView, I am only getting 0.4psi to 0.7psi at idle, about 2psi @1000rpm, 4-5psi around 1500rpm, etc. No alarms or Guardian mode this time around, but I...

    Mercruiser water pressure sensor [Update]

Thanks, Kevin. I have read this thread several times, and any others I could find on the subject. That's how I discovered that the sensor is most likely being distributed by New Eagle and it appears to be manufactured by Woodward https://store.neweagle.net/product/sensor-pressure-50-psi/...

    Mercruiser water pressure sensor [Update]

I am probably overthinking this, but wouldn't the high pressure reading also cause the engine to go into Guardian mode? I know that there is a high limit, but I don't know what the threshold is. I suppose if you aren't getting any alarms that means it's probably happy.

    Mercruiser water pressure sensor [Update]

Mine was reading 0psi according to VesselView and that's when Guardian kicked in. The temperature was fine - both the analog gauge and VesselView were showing normal temps, albeit there was a difference of ~10* F between the two.

    Mercruiser water pressure sensor [Update]

It appears that my water pressure sensor is faulty, which I understand is a pretty common problem. I found an older thread on another forum discussing possible alternatives for the "OEM" sensor, which costs about $140, and New Eagle was mentioned as possibly being the sensor manufacturer. I was...

*Gen 3 Cool Fuel Module Issue*

That’s great to hear, thank you. Aircraft striper took the paint right off with a little bit of elbow grease. I was second guessing myself because of the oxidation, but you make a good point with the aluminum gas tank - I hadn’t thought of that.

*Gen 3 Cool Fuel Module Issue*

I recently discovered that the paint on my Cool Fuel 3 module is peeling and as a result my entire fuel system is full of paint particles. Unfortunately I wasn't even aware of the existence of this problem until now, and I have since read every thread on every forum I could find to gather as...
