    Engine removal

Answer to your original question is yes, engine/transmission can come out at the same time. I pulled both of my engines/trans out of my boat November 2022.

Absolutely frustrated with this Mercruiser engine

Have we ruled out a bad rectifier on the alternator, if it is outputting too high a level of AC voltage that will upset the ECU. Easy check to make. DVOM on AC volts, measure at alternator. Should be 0.2 volts or less.

    Setting MEFI 3 base timing

scoflaw, thanks, that is what I suspected, I need to open up the throttle. Setting is 8 degrees BTDC, correct? Or have you experimented with a slightly different setting?

    Setting MEFI 3 base timing

I am hoping someone who has first hand knowledge of setting base timing on a MEFI 3, 7.4 MPI engine can answer a couple of questions. I know what the procedure is and I tried it last weekend, but suspect it did not work as it should. 1. When I shorted the A and B pins together I did not notice...

    Transmission drive plate

An interesting find, this past winter I decided to rebuild/re-freshen both of my engines. New gaskets, seals, rings, bearings, etc, and also to check there were no components that may need replacing due to age, wear. When removing the transmission from the port engine I found that one of the...

    340 Sundancer HELP! - Question

SeaYaRay, I have the same boat as yours. The two port side batteries are connected in parallel and are the house batteries, and start for port engine. The two batteries on the starboard side are not connected together. One is the start battery for the starboard engine, the other is the start...

Absolutely frustrated with this Mercruiser engine

Like everyone else on this post I am hoping the problem is found soon, and for the least amount of money. I will throw in my two cents worth. 1. Alternator, I think it has been replaced, but worth checking, if the alternator is putting out too much AC voltage then that can cause limited...

    Fuel Cooler White Paste?

Does anyone know what the white paste is between the bracket and the fuel pump and fuel cooler? And if you know what it is where can I get some. It almost looks like the paste that sits between the cooling fan and the computer processor/chip in a PC. Some sort of heat transfer paste? 7.4 MPI...

Lofrans Progress 1 - Removing top part (the part that sits on the deck)

I might go all chain as well, as I have zero luck with the finger, spring, etc, always bends the bolt, I even re-spliced the chain to rode with a nice long taper to the splice, no luck. The Admiral has to assist the rode into the lock by putting a little tension on it in the locker, once on the...

Lofrans Progress 1 - Removing top part (the part that sits on the deck)

I know this is a very old post that started back in 2016, but I did want to share my experience (last winter) with the removal of the windlass top plate from the deck (the original topic of the post). In theory after removing the four nuts from under the deck in the chain locker, the...

Lazy Daze, thanks for the feedback, a great idea to feel for the screw heads.

Forward cabin trim how to remove?

Does anyone know how to remove the rectangular piece of trim that sits directly above the forward cabin port lights? As seen in the picture.

    Recommendation for rebuilt cylinder heads

Just to confirm to all on this thread, I do have oval ports, my castings are 279's. I did order two pairs of these EQ heads and should get them next week. I will try and remember to report back after they have been fitted and engines have a few hours on them, but that will not be until April...

    Recommendation for rebuilt cylinder heads

Thanks, again I appreciate all your comments. I am getting close to hitting that buy button! I will look for the Fel Pro marine gaskets. I like that you painted the heads as well. Had not figured that in, another job to do!

    Recommendation for rebuilt cylinder heads

shenanigans77, another question for you then.....did you use all Mercruiser gaskets (head, intake, rocker covers) or go with any Fel Pro?

    Recommendation for rebuilt cylinder heads

shenanigans77, that is good to know, and I really appreciate your comments. As you already know replacing heads takes some research. These EQ heads are looking more attractive.

    Recommendation for rebuilt cylinder heads

scoflaw, you are correct, I missed that! That is a good price then. So far I am finding out that for the new heads, the castings are made in China, probably no big surprise there. Now that might not be an issue, but something to consider. My thinking is if I go with rebuilt then the castings...

    Recommendation for rebuilt cylinder heads

Shenanigans77, thanks for your recommendation. They are out of my budget, new would be nice but I have been looking at rebuilt/reconditioned heads, they are around $500 a piece.
