An oil sample is never a bad idea but the fact your cooling system holds pressure for such a long time means it is NOT leaking. If it was there would be no pressure. I would top up the overflow jug and keep an eye on it. I recently changed the coolant to cat ELC and have been dealing with a...
Yeah I’m not saying don’t change your oil,but I think as boaters there are bigger issues that concern me when I head out to the big water at 2400 revs for hrs at a time than when I changed the oil the last time lol
Most engine failures are not a result of oil type or lack of changes. They are the result of unforeseen circumstances. I’m much more concerned about a turbo failure or an aftercooler leak or a dropped valve any of which will completely destroy an engine in a heartbeat. A cat loader for example...
Cheap insurance? Maybe for you. I just think it’s a huge waste of my hard earned money to do it if it’s not needed and a waste of resources as well. Just my two cents
Did you drain the block before you ran the non tox through it the first time? And are you sure both sides were completely drained? After I drain block I start engine and pump 5 gallons in at sea water pump. That fills block and heads first with the pink stuff then the manifolds and out the...
I get oil samples done. They tell me what to do. For me it’s every 2 years which is about 90 hrs. Been boating 30 years never had an oil related problem. And I never use synthetic oil only real oil for me
3116 cats don’t need a 1000 hr service it’s at 2000 hrs for valve lash. Most of us will never have to do it. I change oil every 2 years or 100 hrs. The oil samples dictate that.
I can see steam from my exhaust also. Sometimes port side sometimes starboard side sometimes I don’t see any. Seems to depend on air temperatures and the sun shining the right direction. Only happens on plane. Engine temp is also higher on port side on dash gauges but exactly the same (185) on...
So I finally got to the boat this weekend and pulled out a couple of anodes. They looked like new or nearly new anyway. Not sure how old they are but at least 3 years as I have not changed them. Is this good or am I missing something here?
So after a little research I find that a 3116 has no anodes in the engine or aftercooler. The heat exchanger has 3 the engine and trans oil coolers have 1 each. These have lake water going through them? Fresh lake water. I fail to understand how an anode works here and what they are preventing...
Hi there I have a 400 sedan bridge. 3116 cat's in it rated at 350 hp. Plenty of power. 2300 revs is 20-21 knots and fuel consumption is very good. Anything bad you're reading about 3116's are 20 year old stories. Many very happy cat owners out there including myself. Hope this helps
I just stumbled upon this thread about anodes by accident. Have been boating 30 years with 4 different boats and never even heard of anodes let alone replace one. In fact the topic of anodes has never even come up on the dock with fellow boaters. We boat in fresh water and obviously not a...
I have a 98 400 sedan bridge and it looks like the starboard rudder shaft packing needs tightened. Having looked in there I can't imagine how one gets to it. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks for the answer so quickly. Engines start instantly. This engine in trucks uses an intake heater so just wondering if the marine version did also.
