How would you spend $500 for a GPS device?

Raymarine Dragonfly? Not sure how much they are your side but the 7 " screen was impressive. Has transponder but no need to drill holes. I've seen some inventive ways of using it. I have the Garmin 551S, but the screen is hard to focus on when on the move... might be an age thing.

for those that anchor at the beach

We have a 7 -10m tidal range. Life could get real interesting real quick with one of those. Talking of which last weekend I was nearly caught out. Anchored in 3m and had lunch, only just got off at 0.4m after nodding off. That'll teach me.

    Is there a UK supplier?

I'm running with SmartTabs at the moment, I wont diss them because they are good at what they do do, but I find their usefulness at sea limited. I would like to upgrade to Bennetts but cant find a local supplier in the UK.

    Gimbal bearing removal blues

Well I finally got the gimbal bearing out. I had a tool made up by the local engineering workshop. Would not budge it at all. The bearing began to bulge out from the outer race so much strain was but on. In the end I drilled the outer race in two locations, spun the bearing in the gimbal 90...

    Gimbal bearing removal blues

Thanks. The only custom built threaded extractors are found in the USA. I cant afford the 40 day delay through customs getting it to HMS Pomland. I am thinking of a rear axle bearing puller instead of split collet. Attatching that to threaded bar which will go through a hole in some steel plate...

    Gimbal bearing removal blues

Ahhh jeez. I have beat the hell out of a slide hammer and broken 2 split collet extractors trying to get a gimbal bearing out. Sad day especially considering the bearing was probably ok but I wanted to replace the seal behind it which wasn't. I beat that hammer senseless man. It isn't going to...

I might hasten to assure you SWMBO is no laughing matter. The consequences of such a faux pas would be dire in the extreme. I swear she keeps a little black book of my every transgression for the sole purpose of digging out and proving what a insensitive, tactless and miserable b*stid I really...

I'm looking at that boat of yours Gary. I wont say I'm green with envy, well maybe a little bit. A damn fine looking boat. What really drew my eye was the manner in which the tender mounts at the back. I will have to get myself one of those. If for no other reason I'm still trying to work out...

Thanks guys :) Although I am confident with a spanner I think I will have to invest in a book of words for this engine / stern drive combo. Maybe the book of words will tell me why when I mate the upper and lower gear cases, the drive shaft with bleeding o-ring punches a hole through the lower...

Ahh weather. Yes we have lots of weather. I pinned my hopes on Al Gore but empirical evidence suggests that the only hot air comes from his mouth and he's never visited Wales. Im thinking of sending him an invite over the Easter holidays as insurance for good boating weather. Do you think he'll...

Adorable? I'm speechless. They are reprobate hooligans who love nothing better than to upset the equilibrium of harmonious tranquillity aka Dad's patience. Horrid little b*stids is the term that springs to my mind. Did I mention I retore vintage classics? Ever see a little man sneak into his...

Thanks for the pic posting tips :smt038 Before the move. It'd take me an hour to shoe horn her into the driveway. Not good enough!! After the move it now takes a mere 2 hours to winch her up the goat path on the cliff top SWMBO insisted I buy :smt013 and if anybody here is in any...

Thanks for the continued welcomes. Galley Wench... in my dreams. Admiral sounds a plan. I'm still waiting for the mods / admin to approve the pics of the boat. Or is there something else I have to do to be able to post pics? <Oh God!! Just had a horrible thought! SWMBO isn't already on here is...

I thought all my Christmas's had come at once but he will not ship and is 5000 plus plenty miles away. Still it goes to show bargains can be had. The big motivator for me to redo the outdrive rather than discard was the 4K GB pound replacement cost the local engineering shop wanted. Even with...

EYE CANDY!? Now that is funny. Did I mention she's a late eighties model? Everything is kinda sagging .... a bit like SWMBO. A peach in her heyday though. Now, not so much. I will see what I can dig up

"I am the Captain. I am the Captain; not the chauffer." I will repeat that mantra. Thanks. (I'll skip the First Mate bit tho, very unwise, and bound to lead to mutiny that will find me either mowing the lawn on Saturdays and 'in tow' window shopping come Sundays or sleeping in the dog kennel)...
