Retirement

I think your in the best possible situation you could possibly be in. Imagine going to work one day, getting assigned a new long term project and then led into a room with HR in it and 15mins later your on your way home for good. Happened to me at 56 just like that.

You have months until your not actually working anymore and then you have another year of pay and benefits, then your at almost full pay in retirement at 71. Sorry man, but I don't feel bad for you, actually happy that you will now be able to do what ever you want to.

Man Sign me up! I wish I were you right now!
After 2 days, I’m over the shock and looking forward to it. Some coworkers told me , dam man wish I was offered. Went to marina at lunch, did not want to go back to work.
I am going to enjoy this, it’s time.

As you should. Sometimes you just need the wake up call to realize things.

Wow...yes...exactly. you sure you don't do my job at my company? :)

@Pirate Lady not knowing what language you developed in, I am guessing an older tech stack since you referenced cloud, there is always contracting. Do some 3-6 month gigs here and there. I get calls/emails for Mainframe devs still.

I spent my first 8 years out of college bored doing Account Management work for an Insurance company. I then discovered software development and realized it was my passion. I self taught myself and was fortunate to find an employer who took a chance on me. Work was my life once I started software development, and I loved it. Then, I got into management...

I have days where I enjoy management, more days where I do not. I understand @ErikE comments about stress, anxiety, dreading starting your day, outsourcing, etc. "Back in the day" software development was fun, creative, innovative, we solved real problems, wore many hats, we were constantly learning. Now it's so specialized, process heavy, outsourced, audited, it's no longer enjoyable. At least not for me. Product Managers, Product Owners, Business Analysts, Architects, DBAs, Infrastructure, Security, Networking, PMs, SMs, QA, Devs, DevOps, Release Managers...I get it, and I like process, but gone are the days of having fun building and deploying software in my opinion. We, back then, wore all of these hats, and it was fun. I often ask myself if the industry is any better with all this stuff (people and process) in the middle.

I have my moments, my victories (had one today) where it feels good, where I did something that helped, made a difference. I spend most of my time as a punching bag though and in meetings where I spend half my time trying to figure what an offshore resource just said. I wish I had stayed "closer to the code" now. Then I could retire and do consulting or contract work.

So... @Pirate Lady I would absolutely love to be in your "boat" shoes, at the same time I understand the hit to your self esteem/worth.

Ha, we have an office in MI, so perhaps...
Hey, while you up this way, I saw this today. Something to do near you.

We support the semiconductor manufacturing market by repairing subassemblies of the equipment. I tell people it's a glorified carburetor rebuild shop. Like you, we engineers wore many hats, and were tasked with developing new repair processes and post-repair test equipment as new items came to us. 'Loved it! After being sold twice in as many years, we now find ourselves with a global company that throws out "Safety Surveys" about our managers and leads with questions like:
  1. Select the best phrase that describes this individual: Required
    a. Safety is a personal and moral objective to obtain perfection
    b. Needs to constantly improve on safety
    c. Safety is a requirement of their job
Safety is a personal and moral objective to obtain perfection? How about "Don't be stupid and cut off a finger!" I'm not one to take chances with my digits (all twelve of them), but to suggest that we need to obtain perfection through it? I think I'm getting out of here just in time, and it sounds like you did, too.

Obviously you are not buying into the safety culture!
That is a line that gets thrown at me pretty regular if I ever dare question a policy our safety specialist puts in place.

Many years we office workers have to take 7 safety courses and a test, grade can affect your bonus. I get for track workers who are around dangerous equipment all day. But do I really need to know how to inspect a chair before I sit down?

That's a pretty common migration nowadays, IaaS. Not clear why that means they're letting you go, you still have the services on the servers, the servers are just in the cloud. Unless they're moving to something like databricks.

Go enjoy it!

I’m 34 and I’ll be lucky to live to 55, let alone still be capable of much at that point. Don’t miss out if you have the opportunity

Hey Bob! How's the golf game?
Hi Mike,
Just bought my first set, in 30 years, of clubs this week. Played 18 with our son while in Dallas and had a great time. Im decent with Irons and terrible with everything else--but having fun! We looked (via FaceTime with our realtor), at a house in Lakewood yesterday. Didn't make an offer but looks as if things are starting to percolate up again. How is your game?

My game is as poor as ever! But like you I am having fun. That's what retirement should be, right? Let me know if you head this way! Best to Mary

They letting me go 1 week to the day after I turn 70. “Position eliminated” which is code for “get out you old bastard”.
Done a lot thinking, I am gonna love this.
Finished boat today mechanical, just need to wax then launch, week after next. Outdrive went up & down no weird noises. Good sign!

This just showed up in the break room. Enjoy your slogan-free retirement!

Propaganda, it's really always been about common sense procedures that are adhered to rigidly.

I hate corp BS, all about your feelings. Nothing is merit based anymore. One of the reasons I told Corp to go pound sand 4 yrs ago after 35yrs in industrial manufacturing. Spend more time on "feel good" programs tham getting it done. F Corporate.
I remember speaking with Corp HR many years ago regarding termimating a Prod MGR, had months of documentation (gotta have that-even in a "right to work" state), OK Jim, what are you going to do if we termimate? My response- I'll do the job until I find someone, they said you can't do that, "I'll be damned if I can't." Need to stick with business. They have an ID10T issue.

So the first few months will be rough, waa for me-lost my identity of 35yrs. Now I'm just the Old Dude (60 this year) that hangs around and bitches, the kids run it, I'm the "Owl Advisor". I got used to it, and it's good, but took me awhile to get here.

You'll be fine-just keep busy. Stopping is what kills.

"The bank" RIFed me 1 month before my 401K was fully invested. I got nuttin' from them for 401K contributions. I begged and pleaded with HR but got nuttin' in return.

Right-to-work state? Does that mean you cannot sue them?
