Tropical Storm Henri

shut down the bridges? When's the last time that happened? LOL I've lived her 50 years
I grew up in sandwich and it has happened a few times in the larger storms. Usually not for long periods of times but if an emergency happens I don’t want to be stuck on the wrong side.

We had to bag our slip reservation at Sandwich marina this summer since it was a lousy weekend (go figure)!

Kinda strange never called my friends up north to say stay safe from the hurricane…. Usually the other way around. Anyway… stay safe everyone! Mother Nature is no joke!

Is this the calm before the storm?

Our last big hurricane was Bob in 1991, I was just about to start my senior year of high school. On Sunday AM 8/18 it's track was no where near buzzards bay, my parents went out to play a round of golf. By 11AM update it started looking likely we would get it, so a friend and I pulled out our small trailerable boats. By 3 pm, the local truck hauling company was in full gear. When my parents got home we decided to pull both of the bigger boats, first our 1986 Sea Ray 300 weekender. I took that to the boat ramp at 5, got hauled at 9pm, but not without some drama of the props hitting the trailer as I was loaded.

We went home for a quick dinner and brought our 38' sailboat to get hauled, it was pulled at 2am Monday 8/19.

Home for a quick sleep, up at 6am to prep the house. By 6pm the storm was over and we drove to find the sailboat had been knocked over by a car floating in the parking lot. One of our neighbors had a 30' sailboat and borrowed our sailboat mooring, which was even oversized for a 38'. They dragged the mooring nearly a mile I to the harbor.

I got an email this morning from the marina. They wanted all the boats off our three docks, and all the trailerable boats in all the organizations marinas pulled. I called the place where we winter store in NH, Great Bay and arranged a storm haulout. And so we went north this afternoon to Portsmouth NH and up the Piscataqua River to Great Bay. It was like glass with almost no wave action.

I called as we went by the Navy base in Portsmouth and they had the travel lift waiting for us. They had just pulled a Cruisers cantius 60 before we got there. And after they got us on stands, they pulled a Sea Ray 480. So we have the cruisers on one side and the 480 on the other, so we are definitely in out of the wind.

I'm in Provincetown feeling a little exposed out here, so we're headed to Boston within the hour. Will be at the Boston Yacht Haven before noon, good Lord willing.

If I was home, we would prepare for CAT 1's by waxing up our surfboards, cawabonga! Folks up here are not used to this stuff, so I am going to go with the flow and directions of the marinas. Hope it passes quickly, I have places to go!!

Stay safe Capt.

You guys are killing me. If you hauled the boat now you'd leave it out? I have a slip til Nov 1 and I'm running this boat every day I can up to and including Nov 1

I am staying in now. The cape is now out of the storm watch. Guys down in CT, NY and RI stay safe and good luck.

Hell no. I’ll probably get a light pressure wash done, scrape any barnacles and go back in Monday or Tuesday. Depending how fast the storm is dissipating, we may decide to head north to Maine for a couple days.

The north shore may have dodged the bullet, but the reduced wind conditions for us still justify not staying on the dock.

Storm Henry Boyd is coming but no one here is getting hauled. I just came back from my morning run and plenty of guys out fishing. I talked to a few of the old timers
30 plus years here and they say we will be fine. In fact the marina GM is staying in the slip and I'm sure he gets free hauls.

I did put out extra fenders and extra lines. We are on floating docks and on a protected inner river.

Phil,
1. Our docks are closed and all boats ordered removed,
2. Today’s weather picture is much better than yesterday, but it equally could have been worse.
3. Even with the better track, Newburyport lower harbor is still going to take a beating from the wind. And since about half the rain that falls in NH comes down the Merrimack, the current is going to be screaming. In short for the next couple days it’s going to be nasty.
4. The boat is safe and the cost of hauling is less than refinishing serious dock rash that would likely result from 2-3 ft waves and 25kt gusts that are in the better NOAA weather report this morning.
5. The insurance company did notify me by email to use my storm haulout benefit that was available. So while the haulout cost is not an issue, avoiding an “I told you so” response to an insurance damage claim is huge.
6. Either way, boating is going to suck around here for the next couple days so we aren’t losing anything.

As many people on here do, I subscribe to a private weather service. He has a very good track record with storms.

For those of you in the area who are interested, this is HIS summary just now.

Concerns in order: 1. Heavy Rain/flooding, 2. Storm Surge, 3. Wind

Will strengthen until it is past the gulf stream, then will start to fall off in intensity.

Landfall central to eastern Long Island. Second landfall between New Haven & New London. 65-75 mph winds.

Good luck all, stay safe.

Ran home from block on Thursday in awful seas, ran west to Citi Field for the Dead & Company show last night and was back to my harbor and in the slings by noon. Too many boats in my harbor to risk it! 1300$ To haul, Hope insurance will reimbursen some or all of it.

Bob was surreal. Water was so high, buddy and i walked down the pier to our boats. The water was chest high, had to feel carefully with feet to find the pier to walk on. Swim platforms were over our heads. No boat movement, just the highest tide i ever seen. Lines going from boat to pilings that were submerged. Picture all these boats lined up, floating on water, no piers, no pilings, i wish we had taken pictures.
Cars couldnt get to marinas. Parked about a mile from the bay and walked in waist deep water to get to our marina.
