I am not sure what creates the smell, however, I think it is from my AC. I leave it on when I am not on the boat. Is there something about the AC that will pump foul smelling air into the cabin?

just to be sure it is completely in neutral - try jiggling the shifter while you turn the start key - sometimes, even though the gear is in neutral, it doesnt shift out of gear.

Try jiggling the gear shifter while turning the key to start - sometimes the shifter does not completely put the engine in neutral.

And the lucky winner is..... I wiggled the shifter while starting and sure enough, it worked. Thanks so much for the advice.
