Paul, did you do the work yourself? Where did you get all those cool pieces?

As tempting as it was to do this job myself, i am not. A local marine exhaust fabricator put all this together for me. You are looking at Schedule 10 316L Stainless. The fun part of the project was making a mockup template using plumbing pvc.

Im doing all the installation work. I needed to re glass the stbd muffler, changing the input tube angle.

Thanks Bill! We took possession Friday and moved her across the lake Sunday. We haven't taken many pics yet as we were pressed for time. In the chaos, I forgot to measure that...

That looks really good! Are both sides identical or is there a slight difference?

Somebody asked a few days ago if Caterpillar 3116/3126 had the same type of exhaust "showers"………sorry I just saw the question this morning. The answer is no, Cat engines have cast bronze or cast stainless showers (depending upon the arrangement number) instead of a weldment. From the Cat casting, there is a short rubber hose then one or more welded stainless bends made for Sea Ray by DeAngelo in Florida.

Mine are cast bronze - Frank, is it true there were issues with the cast stainless risers and Cat changed those as a recall / bulletin item?

Tom,

i think there were very few with stales risers, probably from 1994-1995 year models. We had a 1993 400EC that was a PD&E boat that was sold here. Cat changed the risers during a service call on the engines. Part of the PD& E package was "turning up" the 350hp 3116's to 390hp and it had some problems early on with the turbos. The showers were changed when the turbos were changed. Both were done under warranty and the time was so low that I don't think there was any damage or leaks that precipitated the shower change. Caterpillar is one of the few engine makers who will do this sort of parts change preemptively rather than waiting on a part to fail.

The boat ran flawlessly until the owner traded her for a new 2009 52DA.

As a side comment, I delivered the 400EC to Pensacola a couple of time for the marina and what a pleasure to run she was. Cruised at about 30 mph and handled like a ski boat on rails.

What is everybody using in their diesels to control soot on the back of the boat. I have CATs and I hate cleaning the soot off the transom after a couple hours of cruising. Do the diesel additives work?

Mike (mjmason1) can you provide further details on how you were able to slide that genny out? Post # 1464.

I have disconnected all of the cables and the oil line along with the 4bolts that holds it down to the plywood. I even built a small extension to the plywood base so that the genny would have some extended space to slide out onto.

No dice. I am trying to use a pair of ratchet straps and it won't budge. At over 400 pounds that thing is a brute. Note that I also need to change the fresh water inflow hose.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

thanks

Dave

Caterpillars don't normally cause a lot of sooting. if they do, the usual causes are overloading or restricted intake air flow.

Overloading……with a normal load onboard, will your engines turn 2800rpm at WOT ? If not, the props have too much pitch for the load. If you can turn 2800 rpm, then your max rated cruise rpms 2400 rpm.

Restricted intake air……usual causes are dirty intake air filters or fouled after coolers.

I added the stateroom starboard outlet today. I tapped into the under cabinet head outlet. It was pretty easy to run the wire behind the head cabinet and stateroom closet. All done. I went with black to match the SMXii and a double outlet with two USB charging ports (requested by the customer - my wife).

Finished adding the dinette outlet. Now we can use our computers at the dinette without an extension cord. That's it for electrical projects.

Excellent ideas both! Anyone using the inhouse vac? I never had much luck with our last one and went to a more portable store bought version.

Andy - We use the vac often, and find it to work well. Change out the bag and filter as it fills up and you should be good.

Bill - nice job. I especially like the dinette outlet

Thanks. Same here on the house vac. I love it. Lots of suction. And since we don't have carpet on the boat the attachments are just fine. We did buy a battery Dyson v6 to take on trips but we just seem to also leave it at the house.

My air horns stopped working. I was reading the forum and looking for the selenoid placement. I took some pics in the windlass locker and saw the air tubes running into a blue protective sleeve. The sleeve went into the master stateroom and the selenoid is located behind the TV on the port side. Easy to get to being I replaced the tv w a flat screen on a swing mount. Can definitely access it through the access hole in the closet if you have the original TV.
In the end it was just a wire off the selenoid. Popped it on and works fine. Figured since there was some confusion on posts I would share the placement.
