340 SUNDANCER THREAD

Hey fellow 340ers,

My carpet in the "conversation pit" aka 2nd berth was damp today.
I can see no leaks on ceiling or wall, there has been no rain, and I have no idea where it might be coming from. Seems like fresh water (I'm in salt)
It was damp furthest to the stern along the couch. Only on floor.

Any ideas? Only thing I can think of is we had ice in the ice bucket behind the captains chair..pretty much right above the wet area. not sure where that drains. Would it possibly be leaking? Nothing obvious on ceiling fabric.

Any other things I should check?

Chris

My model is a little older than yours, but the fresh water tank is under and behind the seating in that area. Tanks leaking or lines? The built in ice bucket hole does have a drain hole on the bottom but that should lead to the bilge.

OK, here's one that maybe no one has seen before. I had an issue on a client's boat, wherein the mid cabin floor and carpeting would get wet after heavy rain, due to a leaking rubrail. The cure was to remove the stainless trim, then remove the rubrail, reseal the hull to deck joint, then reinstall and reseal everything. Problem solved. Your best bet is to grab a hose, and start flooding any suspect areas until you find the leak. It can take quite a while, but you'll find the problem eventually. Hope this helps...

Chris, my leak(s) were from the round skylights. The sealant used from the factory was worn out from the sun and was letting rain water in the cabin. The way I found out was by taking the "Tube" out to expose the bottom of the glass and then had a buddy hose the glass down from outside and that's how I figured out where my leaking came from. Hope that helps.

Bruce and Dale -

thanks for the tips on leaks. i'll check those, because i want everything to be sealed for the rain: but i'm in SoCal where there is a drought and no rain where i am..and this dampness is new.
i just checked the manual for the water tank location and it isnt' labelled! can anyone point me at the location of the water tank on this diagram? bilge_340.jpg

Chris,

The FW tank is under the berth back there. Remove the seat cushions and remove about 6 or 7 screws to remove the plywood cover over the FW tank. The PVC elbow on top is a common leak, but it usually runs to the aft cabin bilge rather than the carpet...

Chris, don't just settle on that one area to be the source. My leaks were not detected for a while, but what finally made me realize where the leak was coming from was the trail of water it left.

It first was evident that the carpet was wet in that aft section, closer to the starboard side. Then I noticed it was wet further up by the pull out section of the salon settee. Then I finally saw the last drops of water on the settee itself. And that's when I looked up and noticed the "Tunnel" for the round skylights showed some moisture stains. I pulled the plastic caps off and found the screws, (3) then took the tunnel out and noticed that was wet too, ran the hose over the topside and there it was. I called my glass guy out to have him re-seal from the bottom with the thick black caulk, hasn't leaked since.

Good Luck and have patience, leaks can take a lot of time to uncover.

Thanks Bruce and Carter. This is going to take time..I checked the water tank (dry) and everywhere I could pull up and out and so far nothing. I'll keep at it, but if it isn't the tank or connections, and since it's fresh water and boat hasn't been washed and no rain for months, then it has to be a source of fresh water in the boat... Galley, bathroom, or cockpit, ac condenser, draining ice bucket or the hoses between...

if it wouldn't ruin the carpet I would put blue food color in the water :)

cheers,

chris

Chris, Check the carpet area around the cabin frig area too, keep that frig locked.

Also, tighten the screws on the bomar flip open port hole windows on each side in the cabin and in the head.

I found the 90 fitting on the pressure side of my water tank split. Replaced that. Skylite leaking. Repaired that. Worst was the one that I just found. Sink drain fitting in head leaking because it had actually broken the molded sink where it mounts. Went to home depot and got one a little larger to fit new hole and fernco connector to make it work.

Can someone with a 340DA post some pics showing how the sun pad gets assembled in between the two facing seats in the stern? I've recently bought a 2002 and have no clue....looks like I've got 2 flat fiberglass pieces (one of em being the table for back there) and 2 pads.....I'm at a loss here so any help would be appreciated.

The two flat fiberglass pieces fit into some slots on the front (where your calfs would touch the seat when sitting) of the rear and forward facing seats on the starboard side. The pads go on top of the fiberglass pieces. When put together the setup will be a u shape.

You will need the table top and another piece that should be located under the aft seating. It just slides out. This is where you store the aft table as well. Then follow as stated above.

thanks.....I'll get it figured out

Chris,

I had a very similar if not exact problem as this. Looked everywhere but finally found it. Turned out to actually be the valve on the back of the vacuflush toilet. Not the part with the foot lever but the rinse valve that is on the "back" of the porcelein. You can't see it unless you remove the bowl. It simply "pushes" into its seat and can be removed by pulling it out. The valve itself is held by a hose clamp. These fail very easily and leak everytime the toilet is flushed. The water runs down the bulkhead and settles in the center of the aft area soaking the carpet. It appears like it might be coming from the sliding door during or after rain. It isn't. Check the valve. Goodluck.

thanks!

First weekend out in the new 340 with the family........what a great boat.....planes in a heartbeat....nice cruise at 3200.....I can't tell ya how happy I am with the way this boat performs with V Drives....what a pleasure it is to dock....3 times in my slip and never touched a thing  .......I did notice when anchoring that the force of the water had managed to rip off 3/4 of my rubber moulding on the bottom of my swim platform....did Sea Ray REALLY think that glue would hold that thing on?

All in all a great day...sorry no pics

I have a 2002 340 and I have a couple of questions:
- Has anyone used Plas DECK synthetic teak? I am looking using for the swimplatform and cockpit area.
- Has anyone figured out a good place to mount a grill? Looks like drilling a hole for a rdo holder is a good option but before I (intentionall) put a hole in my boat I thought I would ask.

Thanks and I enjoy thread and all the tips from everyone. If anyone has a picture on either question above I appreciate it.

I drilled a rod holder on each side of the gunwale. I then can also use for a magmum grille with the rod holder attachment. Works well.
