I have to wonder if it is just me, or maybe it is that time of the year, maybe some posters didn't read the thread before posting, or could even be the fact that I don't tolerate fools gladly, but I was reading the thread: "Big Oops - How to fix a hole you drilled in the bottom of your boat" this morning. Some of the suggestions are as laughable as any I have ever seen and deserve to be in a Boating Bloopers book..........you read them and find them for yourself.

Perhaps it is time to once again point out the fact that if you haven't got a clue and don't know what the hell you are talking about, it is perfectly ok (and even preferable) to "sit one out". Somebody who does have a clue will help out sooner or later. Remember, we are in a position to provide quality information to new boaters, other not so experienced Sea Ray owners, and even experienced owners who just get stumped occasionally. It doesn't help anyone and could, in fact, end up costing someone a ton of unnecessary $ when we post WAG's (wild a$$ guesses).

OK, I'll put away my soap-box now....................

I think you need to be able to make a conscious decision any way. I read through the thread from the start. Some of the suggested fixes were for a laugh (I hope)... I believe I made the correct choice for the issue at hand. I appreciate everyones effort... Frank I'm glad that we have your wealth of knowledge here and I have made it know for as long as I have been here... if asking the question about the Hook on the bottom of the boat was wrong I found it to be a great learning experience (not sure if this was an example?)... Frank thanks for keeping our heads on tight(you've helped me more then once)...

I think I could tell which were supposed to be humorous responses, although it can be difficult at times. There are a bunch of others in that thread that seemed to be well meaning attempts to help by folks who had absolutely no clue about how to help you guys fix the accident. I'm glad you found a fix that worked for you in these circumstances.

And, this has nothing to do with the other thread on the hook in the boat bottom. I had no problem whatsoever with your original question there and I certainly think CSR should be a place to learn what we don't know about boats. I was just poking a little fun at you for editing the question out after doing your homework.

If I have a problem here it is that I think we all need to be conscious about the quality of the information we post on CSR. Some poor smuck may search for how to fix a hole in a boat 5 years in the future and end up looking for a 1/8" hole saw (sorry John!).

OK Frank, You're probably right, a hole on the bottom of the boat would better be repaired by something other than Marine Tex, that being said, I used to drag race small outboard boats in the 17-18 ft range at 100+mph, back then, before nice CLE gear cases, we used to attach the lower unit nose cones on with MT, and I NEVER had one come off.

Ok Frank, no harm done... I can not put a price on the info I have learned from the people on this site...

Keep up your great work Frank...

It's not you.

Some of them are making it up as they go along. Some are just trying to get their post counts up. Some just have to comment on everything. I have pretty much given up trying to give advice, even though there is little on a boat that I cannot repair.

Agreed! Love the posts that go: I don't know anything about ______ but I'll sit back and follow the thread.
While on this point, another pet peeve is posters who either ask questions and never return to answer follow-ups, or never post results. If you don't finish the thread with the actual repair it can't be used for future reference.

Yeah, the one about a carriage bolt with bottom paint over got me rolling my eyes. There is nothing about a hole in the bottom of my boat that would lead me to anything other than a proven professional!

Please don't hold back. Its real hands on knowledge that make this site great.

The site has obviously become very popular and now somewhat "diluted". I made a similar post/observation about a year ago.

You can say that again! Almost 25,000 members, but we all try to help where we can. Threads: 49,043, Posts: 558,074, Members: 24,910 this has grown a lot. I feel it is a nice courtesy to newer members if their first post is a serious question to welcome them and let them know others with knowledge of their issue will be along soon. They may also need help to refine their question or to answer questions those with expertise will need to provide accurate answers.

A man’s gotta know his limitations. I've done fiberglass repair myself but I am hardly a person to give advice on how to. Other things like trailer set up, engine repairs, and such I can comment on but even then my offer is never the end all of possible repair methods.

Franks has given consistent quality repair suggestions and that is why I initially came to this site. The fact that I can post with a bunch of boating losers about stuff is an added benefit I had not seen coming.

All the Good Guys that used to provide valuable information have gone to that other place.....What a bunch of Snobs!

Not all, but unfortunately far too many. Considering the "Tiki Bar" has more threads than 75% of the actual boating related threads, it's easy to see why they left.
