The Turtle goes south

Maybe next fall we should do a "snow bird rendevous trip" down the east coast to Florida........I am sure as we moved south, we would pick up more boats....

Great idea, John.

Mike,

I love your plan. I think if you can stay in one place for while that will help to minimize running around. I think you wanted to do it that way anyway.

On the way up north, driving your truck to the destination marina, then renting compact car just to get to the boat might be easier. This way you only moving in one direction and when you arrive on your boat your truck will be there to take you home. I know that flying is a pain and cost a lot, but sometimes you might wat to mix things up and pick busy airoport so you can find good deals on off season/midweek flights.

My plan is to enjoy my boat for as many months I can. And to explore the fine state of SC. I hate the winters up here and need a refuge from the snow. Plus we love taking the boat on long trips to places far away. As for bringing her back up in the spring... we're still mulling that over. there are 3 marinas in the waccamaw river that we would LOVE to stay at. Actually there's probably more than 3 but we only saw 3. Solomon Islands are great, Annapolis is great. So many great places we would like to park the boat on the way up. We just have to figure out the truck boat logistics. Drive down, boat up, rent a car to retrieve the truck. I'm sure that can get old.

Nice! I like the plan as well. For what it's worth, I know there are some marinas along the Chesapeake that will actually provide transportation to and from their facility for/after winter storage to the marina of your choice in the summer months. So drive to the winter marina in the spring, load up your boat with your supplies, drive the boat down to your summer marina, and then the marina will meet you down at the boat to bring you back to your vehicle. They do the reverse in the fall. The service area is pretty large too. I know my friend at work does this every year. It may be something to look into.

I've always thought we would be snowbirds with one home in the North and one in the South. Our home in Panama City is the one in the North. Our boat is going to be our first one in the South this winter in St Pete.

The Box Red Sex are a baseball team up North somewhere... I think Babe Ruth used to play for them... But now I am showing my age...

This is how I keep myself young, still being in "discovery mode"....

Man, Gary ....see what you did again......you turned a perfectly good thread in to .....you know what. Oh well, Mike's trip is over anyway, so what else is there to discuss?

I think we need "wingtard" back.

My trip isn't over, it just began.

Here's some more pics along the way.

Dinner at some place, I can't remember the name, over by Ocean Marina. Portsmouth is a little rough if you stray outside the "zone". We found this homeless guy hanging out by the library so we invited him for dinner.

Here we are going through the north lock in the Dismal Swamp. Check your strainers after going through the canal, I sucked up lots of leaves and fish.

Here we are tied up in Elizabeth. note the scooter on the sailboat.

Here we are in Swan point. This powercat was at our marina in CT. Dancin' Dave and I were eyeing this custom built CAT all summer long. The owner built two of these, sold one and kept the other. He died this year and the boat was up on blocks all summer. Then one day it was gone and we couldn't find out what happened to it. Well here she is on her way south.

Here's some boats getting ready for the boat parade.

Here's some video of us cruising through the Waccamaw river. This is our second time through this river and it's just amazing. We are dying to spend some time in here next year. really an amazingly beautiful place. The video does not do it justice.

I also want to thank everyone who helped on the journey south. It's so great to have a group of knowledgeable friends who will bend over backwards to help get you to your destination. The first trip up the ICW last year, I must have planned and mapped it out for MONTHS. After day one everything fell apart and you soon realize that much of a trip like this is by the seat of your pants. Having friends along the way, as you can see in this thread, makes it possible and enjoyable to alter your plans due to weather or whatever jumps in front of you. There are so many great people along the way that are there and will help you, on this site, at marinas, fuel docks, other boaters along the way. I hope this thread inspires would be cruisers to get out there and enjoy their boats like we've learned to do. Thanks again to everyone.

Not throwing up on my cockpit carpets.

Never seen them in a can before. We get ours straight from the boiling pot into a brown paper bag. Heck you're really uptown if they put them into a plastic bag (LOL)

Looks like you had a great trip and thanks for sharing Mike. Some of us are still have to enjoy the boating life via others trips....

A big thank you for taking the time and effort to share your experiences with us. Many of us will never have the opportunity to travel great distances with our boats as you are able to and I for one appreciate being able to ride co-pilot with you during your adventures.
