Official 330 Sundancer Thread

Larry, i posted pic's of my tab mod last spring some time, it's on here somewhere. I added 50% to the total length, kept the inboard angle the same, added a couple of topside stringers for strength. I also added about 5 degrees down angle to the extension, the mod'd tabs work very well.

thanks,

on the 5 degree down angle do you feel it helped ? did it provide more lift?

with my install, looks like my install guy uses memphis amps. My limited research hasnt shown much. anyone have any experience with these?

Larry, I definately feel the 5 degree down angle was worth it. I can stay on plane down to around 15/16 kts or so. With 3 bladed props, and 3100 rpm's I get 23.5 / 24 kts cruise. Very noticeable improvement. Did you find the post / pic's?

yes I found the pics, very impressive
not sure if i can recreate those, still on the fence about just going with the bennet 22 x 12 with down fins, my boats older, and after talking to bennett on the risks of extending the chord past 12, they said it could break the actuaters off if you are in heavy following seas and the weight of the water on all that metal put too much downward pressure....

I have a '95 330 as well. Same engines and drives. Last year I had the tabs extended to 12", and the same width as the originals. Just had a metal fab shop tack weld a rectangular shaped stainless 3/16" piece onto the bottoms of the old 9" tabs. The originals have an angled cut on the inside edge, so you get a little extra surface there as well as the 3" added depth. It doesn't sound like a lot, but some of those 17 inchers looked like overkill to me. Well the results were impressive. Put them down all the way to get on plane, and it comes out a lot faster. Can run down to around 2900 with the tabs all the way down, and it still stays up. Probably not very efficient, but gives you an idea of their effectiveness.

I think after fuilly digesting the information provided. I am going to adjust conservatively to the 12 inch ones by bennett with the down fins. My main reasoning is that althought the 15-18 inch fins are probably giving the best deflection, the 12 inch ones will be better than what I have, as well as after looking at lenco and some of the mfrs documentation the the area was around 250 sq/inches + or -. for boat sizes in the low 30's
Also since this will just be a bolt on addition without much effort, that is supported as a configuration from bennett.

I will post how the install and such goes, with any changes in in performance that I can note
and again

THANK YOU ALL for all of the information given, without that bit I might have bitten off more than I could chew.

Larry

Congrats on your decision. If I may sir. In that you are going to bolt on a new tab to an existing tab...Rather than go the entire new tab route, it may be cheaper to get a couple of pieces of stainless from a local shop, bolt that to the existing tab and add the set of drop fins to the slabs of stainless.

Just a thought.

it is actually a replacement tab,
not a bolt on extension
going with the whole new tabs setup from bennett
part # tpo2212df which is 22 x 12 with down fins, tab only will bolt right on to actuaters and hinge no modification or drilling needed

Larry, that 22 by 12 tab update will work fine. I did confirm with Bennett also before I mod'd mine. Either way you'll immediately notice the differance!

Dual Trumpet Horn mounting location

Starting the spring upgrade process. I was tired on others not hearing the weak OEM horn on my 330, so I just bought the Ongaro dual trumpet white powdercoated stainless horns. I tested them on a spare battery and I think they will get attention when needed. Pretty loud for a non-air horn.

Now the question is where to mount them. I was thinking on top of the arch right above the helm or possibly on the side just to the right of the helm. Has anyone mounted one of these and what location would you suggest?

I have a very nice set of Ongaro's on my arch. They are the T!TS........the first year.....If you mount them on top of the arch, mount the power end of the trumpet higher than the sound end.

Otherwise, you will end up taking them apart and sanding the whole thing and yada, yada, yada.....it's not 3xx grade stainless in the housing....

DAMHIK

Anyhow...A weephole on the power end and an angle on the other and all is well

HTH...

I mounted my AFI Air horns on the starboard side directly on the outside of the cupholder next to the helm. I did it this way so I could mount my compressor inside, under the cupholder. I absolutely love my airhorns and they sound 1000x better than factory! You will love it! The only downside to this location is the occasional shin bang! OUCH!

I was thinking that they might get in the way on the side. The walkway is not that wide. It would make for easier wiring though. I could also tilt them down slightly to avoid corrosion issue David warned about. Its harder to do that on a horizontal surface like the arch.

question for everybody, I bought my 95 330 last fall and I'm trying to figure out the batteries. I need new and would like to use starting and deep cycles in, and use 4 instead of just having 3. Does anyone no the layout of where the house are?

thanks,
Don

I have a 95 as well, congrats on your new to you boat !
Mine Is one of the early 95's and has a unique layout for batteries. I have the 2 house batteries (group 27) one is used by starboard engine ,under rear facing part of helm seat, port engine starting battery between port and starboard engine on a plywood plank. and the generater /windlass battery mounted on a plywood plank next to generator on top of water heater on plywood plank, on starboard side. most i have seen have 2 starting batteries on port side along with water heater
hope this helps

hey Larry,
that is a unique layout for your boat. my 330 has 2 batteries under the rear facing helm seat and 1 one on the portside in front of the water heater on the floor (that's where I have room to add another one). I need new batteries so I was thinking if any were only used for starting something I would get a starting battery only for those and deep cycle for the house.

Here's a technical question regarding the Raytheon depth finder/speedo unit. My thru-hull transducer was leaking last year and I'm trying to track down an o-ring for it, but I need to find out the model of the transducer. I contacted Raymarine hoping they could help, but they directed me to Gemeco. Apparently these transducers were made by Gemeco out of South Carolina. I contacted Gemeco and they need to know which transducer unit it is. Of course that's not an easy thing to identify as the transducer does not seem to have any numbers on it.

I have the original owners manual for the Raytheon depth unit but no where does it say the model of the transducer.

So by any chance does anyone happen to know this? Or have you had leaking transducers before and if so how did you fix?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi All,

Have a few questions for those of you with a '97 330DA:

1). We purchased a 9' Zodiac over the winter with a 15hp outboard. We are trying to decide between the Hurley Dinghy Davits or the Nautley Dinghy Ramp HD+ system. Anyone have one of these brands installed? They both look like great setups.
2). Any other setups for bringing the dinghy along? I don't love the idea of flipping it up, motor and all with Weaver Davits.
3). Where do you Store your dinghy gas tank when not in use? Leave inside the dink w/ the cover on?

I did search the entire dinghy and 330 threads, but didn't see any comments specifically speaking to this topic from 330DA owners and I want to make the right decision as both are fairly costly. Thanks!

I have the Nautley system and I am very happy with it, I have a 9.9hp motor on a 9ft Mercury inflatable. I think the Nautley works better on our boat due to the Nautley lifts the boat a little higher, you need the extra clearance because of the double platform.
