DO you have a picture of the first tub you stepped foot on?

Pack, if you know how to properly control your boat, you don't need fenders. Mine have not been used in years, and then only for when I am tied to a steel wall in Chicago or when rafting (which is very seldom, as I don't raft to those who I have less than 100% confidence in, coincidentally meaning that we'll never be rafting with ya, no offense).

Oh, and a side note, I have no gel coat damage on my vessel nor any of my past three boats. Knock on wood, of course.
Sferg...... remember, I still haven't been boating a full year yet. I would love to be able to "control my boat" well enough to not need fenders. Maybe in a few years, with lots of practice..... but for now my motto is: fenders are cheap, gel coat is expensive

I almost missed this...... I'll bet if you ever meet me you wouldn't say that. I know down deep you really like me, and I really like you.

I don't think it should bother you that I can be just like you in so many ways but still have a different point of view.

Have a Merry Christmas

Don't misunderstand, I suspect we would get along fine, as long as politics don't come up. There's only one person that I have met that I would raft with, and he's my slip neighbor. I'd anchor next to you, if it makes you feel any better.

Keep practicing your boat handling, there will come a day when you don't need fenders.

Fair enough

Why wouldn’t you put out fenders on the side you will tie to the dock before backing down a ramp?

Scott,
If your canoe is a dock queen (I know your's is not) on permanent lashings or launching/docking in protected port then maybe so but if your launching and docking in current then they are a must. I may look like a Rookie even after many years on the water but my boat still looks good and that's all that matters.

I have no axe to grind here and no issue with you, it’s just my opinion.

Have a great Christmas and I hope Santa brings all the new toy for your boat that you asked for.

hmmmmm...... and I guess you don't put out your fenders before you back it down the ramp? I wonder what YOUR gel coat looks like if that is the case?:smt009

Since I don't tie up to the dock.....NO! I would then look silly driving through the no wake zone with my fenders out!

and shame on you for using the "C" word this time of year.

Well I guess boating in the Puget Sound is a little different than where you go boating. We always tie up to a dock..... especially to get passengers aboard. Who parks your truck after you put the boat in the water? Does he/she have to swim out to the boat?

And what "C" word are you talking about?

It needs some serious TLC now, but the new owners are determined to get her restored.

The first boat I remember was the 40' trawler pictured below. My dad chartered it for 2 weeks in the summer of 1983. I caught my first salmon on that trip...

The first boat my family owned was this 1967 31' Trojan... Picture taken during a trip to the San Juan Islands circa 1984. I'm on the fly bridge with my dad.
