We're having the usual fun this year with unwillingly supplying the locker. So far, between our guests and my family, we have sent him 3 pairs of sunglasses (2 of which were the expensive >$100 kind!), 3 baseball caps, a cell phone, couple cans of beer, 2 nice fenders, 1 3/4" rope, kids bikini top and a sandal. i think the worst was this past weekend. We rafted up with our slip mates boat (290 Chaparral) and their guests which included their neice and her new husband of 1 week (just got back from their honeymoon). He was very familiar with boating/fishing and kind of bragged about knowing how to make all kinds of knots... a wannabe salty dog type but only 25 yrs old. Well, he had to tie 2 lines together for us to pull the boats closer together and had done a marelous job at making one of those fancy knots you see on animatedknots.com when I heard the "Ping, ping, ping..SPLASH" sound. Yeah, the new grooms wedding ring...

We were in about 4 ft of water so he did get out and try to find it. (We learned long ago that Davey doesn't give things back.) Wish he were there when the beer can slipped from my hand...

At the lake house that we go to on the weekend, we have had several things given to the lake. First was my blackberry, had a Sea Ray sweatshirt on and went to get my nephew out of the boat and the blackberry (which was in the front pocket of the sweatshirt) decided it was hot and want to go for a swim. Two weekends ago they had some family come down from Montana and one couples had just recently got engaged. She took off her ring and handed it to her husband so that she could go swimming and he dropped it between the cracks in the dock. Neither were recovered :smt009

....2 nice fenders,.....and a sandal. ...

The fender sunk? Or did it float off?

Just a tip – we add our boat name to our fenders using permanent markers. I don’t know if we would get it back if we lost one but it cuts down on the odds of someone taking it due to the boat name on it.

As far as the sandal goes, tell the kid to hop on one foot and your good to go.

My wife lost my cap. It had to be my good one too. :smt009

Ahh.. the fenders... 1 somehow came untied by itself and was lost in our marina one afternoon a couple of weeks ago. The other was lost on a run up the atlantic (my buddy thought it was OK to leave it tied to the cleat even though I asked him to untie it and store it aboard).

Good idea about the name. I would think it would have saved the one we lost within the marina. I may do the same with the other sandal.

Rules of the Sea

Rules of the Sea

There are a few certainties in boating.

If you only have one of something, it will break at the worst possible time.

If you have a spare for that item, the first one will break and spare will jump overboard or break in the process of installing it.

If you have two spares for something, the first one never breaks or fails.

When I have some part fail, I try to buy two replacements and if it takes screws or bolts I buy three ... one for the slot to be ruined, one to fall overboard and one to actually fasten the item back to the boat.

Davey Jones gets so much free stuff!

We had an artice in our paper a few weeks ago about a guy that retrieves lost items underwater. He has a very high sucess rate. All you have to do is pay him for his services.

Davey Jones taketh and sometimes giveth.

Last time out He toke My favorite Boating Sandels that I have had for about 2 years and he toke my snorkle.

But I have to admit I have gotten some pretty cool stuff from him every once in a great while. he gave me what has become my favorite jacket - reall nice harbor revesiable windbreak with a collar stowing hood. So I think I'm still on the better side of the give and take.

Recovered:

Fancy ski boot after 1/2 hour in 12 feet while drifting on a lake.

Maui Jim Sunglasses on same lake - 8 feet and 2 ft mud.

Rusty nail near dock where kids play - 5 ft plus 2 ft mud.

Entire fishing pole in 18 ft where waves crest on 2nd sand bar.

Dinghy anchor in 5 feet after returning from snorkling with wife 100 yards away and drifting (took 1/2 hour).

Boat brush on pole in 15 feet under several boats on floating docks - not much room to come back up.

Main boat anchor in 12 feet where waves crest after 1/2 hour.

Lost:

Towel 2 days ago in 15 - 20 feet right off bow - no energy.

Gerry - sorry about the beer. You need a coozy foam thing.

I've lost a couple hats, too many sunglasses, an anchor(don't ask) and one year a pager. I jumped off the back of the boat and in mid air realized I had it on (I was on call that day); I turned in mid air removed it and threw it to the boat. My buddy Greg and the admiral both went to catch it----you guessed it--- ping pong oops @*&$^ wait, i got it, OH MY GOD. They laughed, I said if you left it alone it would have londed on the boat  I wasn't on call anymore and we enjoyed several non-interupted hours on the lake.
Thanks for Covering for me Davey

I've lost my share and recovered my share.

Living on the main canal to a 400 home waterfront development, a LOT of stuff floats by, especially after storms. I usually pick them out and put them on display at my dock for a few weeks. If no one re-claims, and the item is in good shape, it goes in the shed. Still using an 8 foot wooden step ladder that floated by about 10 years ago. It still had the tags on it. Numerous bait wells float by....a real nice lobster pot once....a teakwood end table....etc, etc...

Biggest thing I lost was the top of one of my picnic tables and the umbrella that was attached to it. I forgot to put the darn thing down and went to work during storm forcast. On the way to Davey's, it tore a screen and cracked some siding on the side of my sunroom.... :smt013

I've only had my boat since '06 Oct.

Davey must hate me I've not lost anything but have recoverd:

Of Value:
Ski Life Vest Body Glove model looked expensive
Large White bucket. Now used to keep fish and bait in.
1 Beer (Don't drink beer) which makes me surprised you lost one cause this one was floating and was still cold.

Of No Value:
Empty Water Bottle
Empty Sports Drink Bottle
Plastic Ice Bag
4 Cans various soda's

It's amazing how much trash I run across, I guess I'm a bit nuts cause I actually stop and go back and pluck it from the water.

I actually think I pull more tash out of Tampa Bay then Fish.

Morph, you'd be busy up here. I've seen tires still on their rims floating, 50 gallon barrels, a refridgerator, coolers...

Gerry I know I'm kinda close to you. Can you tell me where you do your boating? I have an old snorkle and mask I would like to try on again.

My mom dropped my digital camera in the gulf of mexico... i was so mad.. she got me a new one tho.. one of those olympus underwater digital cameras.. best thing ever! i was so mad tho.. went 2 weeks with a new boat and no digital camera to take pictures of my first boating experiences!

I made a deal at my marina. You loose something, I dive down and get it. Payment is my choice of Scotch or my choice of a box of Cigars. If I don't retrieve it, they don't pay. So far i'm 3 for 3. maybe I can switch occupations and become a salvage diver

Ive lost hats, sunglasses, a bilge pump buckets and one time even charts. The only stuff i recover is trash. give and take is out of balance.

The Mississippi River taketh away! I've lost hats, cell phone(s), top to a grill, lower unit/prop(worst boating day of my life), glasses, lanyard.

Only thing I've found was a couple of really nice ski vests that were floats down river.
