The Mrs and I are thinking about going to Gatlingurg, TN for a week long vacation. we always do the beach and this year we are thinking the mountains.

Anyone ever been here? Can you recommend a good place, preferably a cabin in the mountains, to stay?

Thanks

We are actually talking about taking a weekend trip there on October 10th. Paige has said she wants to get out of town and would like to go there or Norfolk Va so I will be following this thread as well. Great timing

We stopped in Gatlinberg the day before we toured S/R's Knoxville facility. Gatlinberg was full of tourist shops etc...and lots of people on spring break. I wish I could help you on a cabin type resort in that area. This area would be beautiful during the foliage change...and the further you were off the beaten path, the better.

You all had better get a room ASAP if you can. We will be starting peak leave season at that time. I assume you know both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are just big tourist trap now.

Sorry Wes, Yes, Yes what Paige wants at this time Paige gets. Personally when we go we stay at the Hampton Inns in either place. We live in the mountain so we are going for the shops and restaurants, etc. IMHO - Most of the cabin places I've seen are just like condo type places, one right on top of the other, not really like a mountain get-away place. What kind of place is Paige looking for?

I've stopped there for gas before.

And it wasn't for the car.

Ok, Gary what was it for?? I know it was not for the boat.

??? Which place are you talking about Gatlinburg or Norfork?

Gatlinburg itself is the classic american tourist trap. However, the Smokey mountains and the surrounding area are awesome and well worth the trip. We went to Norris lake a few years back and spent two days in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. Did the Dollywood thing, indoor skydiving,go-karts,mining for "gold",Floyd Garretts museum, the Smokey mountains etc. and had a great time. I can't rec. a specific place to stay but I know there are lots of cabins in the surrounding area.
Ef u kan handel the bier swillin, tabako smokin,Nascar luvin rednex wit the bouts smaller thin a 302 thin u shuld haf a gret tyme. Hey Blueeyed boater-wuz up?

Norfolk,I guess could be an ok destination. its hard for me to look at it that way because I live in the area. Depending on what you want to do/see,I can definitely provide some recs. The USS Wisconsin is cool,The Spirit of Norfolk for a dinner cruise is pretty cool,Nauticus(a maritime type museum)is neat, etc. etc. If you don't mind driving a little bit and the weather is good-go down to the VB oceanfront and go to Catch 31 for dinner. Maybe take an offshore chartered fishing trip out of Rudee inlet. Let me know if you have any questions. I will be out of town that weekend(daughters performing on a Carnival cruise ship) otherwise I would volunteer to provide some local hospitality.

If you come to Norfolk and want to take a short 30M ride, I'll have you and your lovely wife over for dinner here in Williamsburg.... Ask Skip... the food is good.

We can discuss your censorship issues.

I live about 45 min away from Gatlinburg in Jefferson City. I usually spend my time avoiding the area of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge but they do have the restaurants and shops.

I would personally either camp in the Smokies (if interested I can tell you which campground to stay in and which to avoid), or stay on the other side of the park in Townsend. Before I moved to the area I stayed in some of the cabins rented by these folks and I never had a complaint (they may even have something on the Gatlinburg side):

Perfect. We are not hussle bussle folks, like it quiet, secluded, peaceful, where we can hop in the car and get to the "big city" in 20 - 30 minutes. Which is why we love Kiawah, SC, 20 minutes from Charleston yet it's peaceful and quiet on the island....except during construction.

Stayed there this summer for a long weekend, well, Pigeon Forge that is (right next door). It was a little bit cheaper than staying in actual Gatlinburg. We had a cabin in the woods. It was nice, and not too far away from town. We used Alpine Mountain Chalets. http://www.alpinemountainchalets.com
You can catch specials with them if you are lucky.

There are a ton of other chalet rentals in the area. Just google pigeon forge or gatlinburg chalets .

He just wants to ride the boats:

Greg didn't ride the boats because he couldn't make up his mind on which one to get on.
