Retirement

I am 66 and was planning on retiring at the end of this year. Because of COVID we have been working remotely for the past two years. We now have the option to continue to work remotely. I have thought about continuing, between being home and getting 7 weeks of vacation it seems I am semi-retired now. What I think will make me still leave is that the work no longer interests me. I am a software engineer and have been doing it since 1979. If only I could find a way for my hobbies to bring in income instead of causing outflow.

So mine is the AZ driver gig. I get to mess with cars and the boat. I also get to interface with the actual AAA young man that works on my car. He lets me get underneath it standing up! Yay, plus like one of the other members said, I have prepped them with June 2023, I go to Tuesday-Thursday. Or don’t schedule me at all. :)

I retired and in 6 weeks decided to get a job. Worked for another 7 years doing something completely different. Find a new job.

I am a corporate pilot and tired of being gone so much. I just turned 60 and have decided April 1st 2024 is my last day.....just in time for boat season! I just bought my Sea Ray 340 this past August and am looking forward to being on it most of the summer. Due to the pilot shortage my company has asked me to remain as "part time" to fill in the schedule when needed. I have agreed to that but no more than 4 days per month in the summer. I am currently awaiting my third back surgery so I will sit out most of this winter.

I decided last year to early retire at 59 and pulled the trigger effective last Oct 1st. I am really enjoying being in complete control of what I do. Not bored yet at all. Financially not the smartest move since I retired at the highest income of my career, but I was burned out and more than not enjoying it. I was started to hate what I was doing. My wife and I's lives are not rosy, dealing with some mental health issues of our oldest son. That factored into retiring too. I am just hitting the age when friends and colleagues are having life altering health issues, and a few have dropped dead or had cancer. Time is the one asset you cannot get more of. Use it the best you can. And not to make someone else richer.

And not to make someone else richer.
This was the primary reason I retired…. I made a very good living but the majority shareholder made a ton more.
I lasted 2 years retired ….. my wife who quit her career to raise the kids…. Got a job when I retired…. Wtf ????….So I was home alone. It’s really hard to find normal drinking buddies so I bought a small business. Hired my son to run it. It’s had its ups and downs but mostly positive

Now, up in Michigan this time of the year wears on me. I'm an outside person but it needs to be warm to hot out. Cabin fever has already set in. At this point, I don't see us moving south again. I hope once MIL is in memory assisted living we can get out of here for a couple of months in the winter at least.
Back to retirement, if you have to watch every penny spent, you probably shouldn't retire. That has to be a much to stressful way to live.
I'm seriously thinking about getting bids on heating the garage so that I can putz around out there while being cooped up in the winter.

We are building our down sizing house right now. I am definitely heating the garage. There are a lot of options now…. Check around

Do it. Having the garage even into the low 60's is a game-changer. If you spent much time on a creeper, consider a ceiling fan to help push the heat down. Around here, pellet stoves are the bomb, as the fuel is relatively cheap, and most can be controlled with a thermostat for hands-off operation. Also, if your area is prone to power outages, it doesn't take much of a generator to keep them running.

I put heat in my garage last year, one of the best things I have done. It's great to be able to work in the garage and not freeze to death. When I put propane in the house I added another valve for the garage. Worked out great. If I were building a house from scratch, I would put in radiant floor heat, nothing like walking on a warm floor when it's frigid out.

Back when I lived in Ohio, built a house. 2 car extra wide garage, insulated, heated, drain in floor, hot and cold running water. I sure miss it. The garage, not Ohio.

We are building our new place to replace the cottage on Georgian Bay. No room on the lot for a garage. But my retirement plans involve owning and tinkering with a 69 or 70 Chevelle so I need to figure how to make that happen. I may buy a vacant lot and build just a garage. Or maybe we just keep a place near Toronto that has a garage. We'll see. For now the new house is the priority. Hope to be in by end of June, assuming they can continue through winter. They're starting on the posts and beams today! Basement walkout level and main floor is framed and now they are going up to the roof with the posts. We have a ring camera up there so I can watch the action. Best show on TV for us right now!

Congrats to both of you.

I LOVE house pics and building. We built our last 2 houses and even though there was a lot of pain there was the joy of getting just what you wanted (or could afford). Like having a baby.

I love how cheap and easy cameras are now. I sit in Dallas freezing my ass off then look out the window of the FL condo and count the days. Could be a bit sunnier today though. Will be there in 3 weeks.

Keep the house progress pics coming.
