It’s time to REOPEN the economy

Maybe. Maybe not.

Until this country gains herd immunity, there will still be chances of infections. But so far statistics still show those in danger have underlying medical problems or elderly.

We can put the healthy back to work.
Absolutely! Common sense and personal responsibility should rule the day. Publicly shame those that put themselves and others at risk by ignoring the new reality and lets move on. Will some still get the virus? Sure, its sad if they die but radically changing life as we know it over what in the end is bad cold for the vast majority of humans is not warranted. It's amazing how being pragmatic about this subject exposes one to accusations of being cavalier.
Our governor is talking about the need to be able to do deep disinfecting of all playground equipment and public transportation and schools ect. before we can all get back to normal activity. No one is talking about the benefit of the nation's young rolling around in the filth and picking up little bugs along the way for their bodies to build its immune systems. The conversation over the years has even been how just the over use of hand sanitizer in preschools and kindergartens has likely lead to the increase in the rates of food allergies and the like among children. I predict a lot of egg-head scratching in a few years when they see these rates shoot thru the roof! Lets look at this from the window of the international space station and do the smartest thing we can for the long term and not the short term "feels safe or seems like the good thing to do" approach.

With Erie Canal boating season in jeopardy, business owners, officials voice concerns

Another summertime tradition may be in peril: recreational boating on the Erie Canal.

The economic "pause" Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo ordered in response to the Covid-19 pandemic halted the canal's off-season maintenance and repair work in Lockport, Rochester and six sites farther east.

Most state Canal Corp. workers were sent home as nonessential personnel on March 17, canal spokesman Shane Mahar said Tuesday.

Mike Murphy, owner of Lockport Locks and Erie Canal Cruises, whose tour boats carried 45,000 passengers last year, said Tuesday he takes for granted the canal won't open as scheduled on May 15.

"If Cuomo in his wisdom says, 'OK, May 1 everything opens,' we're looking toward the end of June before anything happens," Murphy said.

Murphy said groups have canceled advance bookings on his boat ride into August.

"There's no definite answer for what's going on," Murphy said.

That's because the abandoned repair work would take about 60 days to complete, according to the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, a federal agency that promotes canal business and tourism.

The Erie Canal never has been closed for an entire year since it opened 195 years ago.

The Canal Corp. said in a statement that it is "currently evaluating operational options to ensure New Yorkers will have access to the Canal system this season."

When will the canal be filled and the lock gates opened?

"We do not know, so we are trying to work with the New York Power Authority and the Canal Corp. to get an answer to that question," said Bob Radliff, executive director of the Heritage Corridor.

The Canal Corp. operates as a subsidiary of the New York Power Authority.

"We urge the New York Power Authority and the NYS Canal Corp. to reconsider their decision to suspend essential repairs and construction in order to safely reopen the full NYS Canal System as soon as possible and to ensure a timely and full recovery for all New Yorkers," Radliff wrote last week to Gil C. Quiniones, president and CEO of the New York Power Authority.

"Once you cancel or suspend operations, as we’re all finding out right now, it’s that much harder to get back up and running," said Erin M. Tobin, vice president of policy and preservation for the Preservation League of New York.

"There’s no better way to demonstrate the resilience of our state than to have the canal be open for business in 2020," Tobin said.

"If (the season) is delayed, we’re concerned about potential economic impact on canal communities and businesses along the entire system," Radliff said in an interview.

"There’s different events and things that are scheduled and people need to assess whether they’re going to cancel or postpone," Radliff said. "The more information, the more transparency we can all have, the better decision-making that can occur.”

Radliff's letter to Quiniones said the canal should be considered essential infrastructure and should be maintained. It noted that other agencies, such as State Parks and the Department of Transportation, are allowed to carry out projects despite Cuomo's pause order.

Our governor Gretchen saved the day with an executive order today to buy bar and restaurants liquor inventory back

The order empowers the MLCC to use its revolving fund to buy spirits remaining in inventory from bars and restaurants that purchased the spirits prior to March 16, 2020 for their full purchase price. Liquor licensees approved for the program have until 90 days after the state’s emergency and disasters declarations are lifted to re-purchase the spirits from the MLCC.

“Michigan’s 8,500 on-premises liquor licensees continue to make unprecedented sacrifices to help slow the spread of COVID-19 across our state,” Governor Whitmer said. “This buy-back program will help our bars and restaurants critical to Michigan’s economy weather the storm through this challenging time in our history.”
Uh, if the bars sell back their inventory I assume at cost, what are they going to sell to patrons when the orders are lifted? How about just giving them several months of a grace period to pay their accounts and an interest free loan to the distributors that have yet to be paid? Good bye sweet America, if these ideas are the best the leaders can come up with, we are certainly doomed!

That’s probably the only inventory they have that will keep .

Soon protests will start happening everywhere. People will not stay locked in much longer. May 1st is a key date. I'm heading to Fla next week to look at houses. Moving in May, and I expect to be boating by mid May in Fla. At least I have this to look forward to.

Florida is one of the states setting up border checkpoints for those that don’t live there and in most cases making them self quarantine for two weeks without symptoms ......just a heads up... North Carolina is another if you are traveling thru

Didn’t they protest in MI today? Thought I seen something on the news. Cars everywhere at the State House or something.

"Second-wave outbreak" is the new "wait two weeks." A "second wave" can come at anytime so they can never be wrong.

Most hospitals are not overwhelmed anymore, they’re prepared and know how to treat for covid now.

0.0069% - The percentage of Americans that have died from Covid but we have paralysis by analysis on opening the economy back up.

I just saw Cuomo's press briefing.... 2,000 new cases/day and just over 700 dead/day.... the new cases are down but not the deaths....they have a way to go there

I like this chart . 90% of deaths over 60,
73% over 70.

Just seen Ky governor on tv for his briefing. You can hear the protestors chanting and horns. I think things coming to a head. Common sense will prevail.
UNREAL!

This is similar to Canada I believe.

I'm Canadian and yes, Mr. Trudeau is spending tax dollars like a drunken sailor. Something for everyone it seems. It still won't be enough and it we'll be paying it back with increased taxes for generations to come. Plus, he's not wanting to get the economy going for some time (for safety's sake) or until it's dead whichever comes first...
