I have looked at mine before and they are "riveted" to the windshield. You should drill out the rivet to remove the old one. If you go back with a screw, I am afraid it will work loose as I don't think you can tighten it down as it will not move as you need it to. Going back with a rivet might be the best thing to do.

I would put a temporary spacer between the latch and windshield frame so they rotate after a pop rivet is used to secure.
I think without a spacer the rivet would pull it too tight?
