Two questions

Hi everyone, I thought the group would be able to help me with two questions I have. Let me give some background. Yesterday I did a girls only B-Day cruise for my wife and her friends (12 people total). I noticed that when getting on Plane my port engine seemed to produce a higher RPM than the Starboard. Is this normal due to all the weight in the back of the boat and lightly more wieght to starboard? The second question I have is about running at cocktail speed with the generator going. Has anyone done this or do you only use when engines are off and you are at anchor?

Thanks for the help. BTW 11 drunk women on a 340 is very interesting....I will post pics when I download them.

Hi Bill,
Yes I do have a synch guage and I also need slightly more RPM from my Port vs. Starboard engine. But I also then get an overall greater RPM output from the Port engine. I just an not sure if it was b/c I had so much weight and more of it was toward Starboard. I had to use full throttle to get on plane and then could not back below 3800rpm or I would fall off plane. Any thoughts on the genni?

Most of the time when I am out cruising I have the generator on to run it it at least an hour per week as recommended it the manual. I keep the A/C on to give it some load.

I always run my genny from idle to Plane to cruise! No problems. The PO of my boat did this and my mechanic recommends it as the biggest problems he's seen are from genny's that don't get used! Todd

Regarding your RPMs the Port has a higher RPM and therefore has less load. It could be your trim tabs or maybe there was a slight side current and you were turning just slightly to go straight this will tip the boat to the windward side and increase drag. If you were a sterndrive one outdrive might be higher than the other. And there is the lets not go there: the engines and drivetrains. Just some thoughts.

Cheers,
Rich

I think your guess is correct, if you have a lot of extra weight in the boat and its all aft, then it's going to be more difficult to get out of the hole and on plane. As far as the genny goes, I don't think there's really any problem running it while cruising, however, when you start the gen you should be stopped otherwise you might have problems drawing water through the gen. seacock. Sounds like a good time was had by all. You have more guts than me.

I have the same boat as you. Depending on the average passenger weight, where they are sitting, and how much fuel and water you are carrying, you will need to run 3600 RPM or above to keep on plane (trim tabs may help some here).

I run the generator all the time. Just down start it while you are moving fast, as it will not always pick up water if you do that.

Looks like fun!

thanks everyone for the replies. I feel more comfortable running with the genni going now. I will also just keep the blowers on at any speed other than cruise.
