To dig deeper….I actually called Tom’s company to do a reverse mortgage on our paid off house. They offered half its appraised value….. and you sign over the house…. They own it unless you pay back the loan with rediculous interest.
The guy is a scum bag using his name to rip off the elderly and their families

Y'all sure have a hard on over this.... Selleck doesn't own AAG. Just a spokesman. That makes Pat Boone, Robert Wagner and a number of others scumbags too? I actually had a neighbor down in Florida that did a reverse mortgage on their home to free up cash for them to enjoy their retirement. No idea who they used, AAG or some other company. No kids to have fighting over inheritance. It worked for them. They actually sold the home and went into a retirement community after about 5 years.

I don't know the guy personally and I've liked his shows. Just watched all the Jesse Stone movies over the winter.

There are a lot of products I hate personally (like Toyota) but I don't call spokespersons that advertise for them scumbags.

There's my take...

I was on a flight back from Brazil a few years ago in first class …we stopped in Panama City and this guy got on and sat beside me… pretty drunk and a chatty Kathy he was a manager for the stars… what ever that meant. He was down in Panama because woody harrelson bought a house there and he was overlooking the progress. He started telling me unbelievable stuff about Hollywood stars… will smith likes guys too… like Bazarre stuff …. He had no reason to lie…. At the end every actor/actress in Hollywood is Phucked…. That’s all I got out of the conversation with this guy

Ok so you like the old Selleck stuff and thought it would nice to discuss it, I get it, it's a subject. So as a kid I really liked Magnum PI and Quigley down under movie was pretty good I thought. But pretty much after that it was over, I mean I know he has a lot of movies, but he basically sucks from my point of view. Not sure how you feel about them, but that's me. I'm a much bigger SiFi guy.

I never watched Magnum PI or any of his old stuff, We watched the Jesse Stone movies during the early part of covid, and enjoyed them, not great movies by any means, but they were just pretty clean and easy to watch. My dad mentioned that he really enjoyed Blue Bloods, I had never watched, so my wife and I recorded it and watched it from beginning to end.
Now I need to mention, my wife absolutely hates cussing, especially the fbomb. So that does affect the direction of our tv and movie viewing, towards more clean stuff. For instance we are now watching a series called heartland, It seems to be geared toward junior high girls, but she enjoys it, so I dutifully watch.

Funny this thread has been posted. I have no issues with him but every time we see his commercial I think 'what does he know about needing money'...lol. Can't remember word for word what the ad says but something along the line of him needing money and reverse mortgaging his house

I always wonder about the washed up actors that hock products or schemes. You would think with what they get paid acting, they would not need to do cheesy commercials to earn a living. My guess is that many of them just live way outside of their means or got taken advantage of by managers and advisors and were financially ruined. They are actors after all probably few actually have more than a high school education. Tom has to be making decent money staring on Blue Bloods. I hate anyone though that is advising folks to borrow money.

I Hope @Blueone realizes that Tom didnt invent the reverse mortgage, and doesnt administer the plans. I would think his hatred would be better placed at the banks that developed this scheme.
I have never seen one of these commercials, I didnt even realize the Tom advertised for them until blue mentioned it in another thread.
I hope no one thinks I think that reverse mortgages are a sound plan, I only know of 1 person (my next door neighbor) who has done it, and it allowed her to stay in her home a good 15 years after the mortgage until her death, she would have never been able to do that otherwise. The bank is going to take a beating on this one, it is going up for sheriffs auction before long, the sheriff texted me friday and told me they are finally starting the process. Some of her extended family moved into the house towards the end of her life and have trashed the place, I am considering buying it, turn it into a rental so I can control who lives there.

Blueone, don’t be a hater. Maybe this is the audience Tom is hoping to reach! If only he would stop that restraining order and take your call.

This is a perfect example of how a reverse mortgage is supposed to work. Too old to make money, no good family to help them, too old to move to another place, and thanks to a reverse mortgage the bank handed her cash, she got to live in her home free of debt, except for paying taxes and utlilities, until she leaves this earth.

There is a place for reverse mortgages. Maybe not in your family or mine, but there are old people out there that need it!! Open your mind to those folks and you won’t hate Tom so much. He can’t help it if some stupid older folks get a reverse mortgage, to get the cash to live a better life, not realizing they are giving up a huge percentage of equity in their homes.

My grandmother lived until she was 98 years old. Lived in her house the entire time. She ran out of retirement savings and then she got a reverse mortgage for the last couple of years. (With my CPA aunt’s blessing -POA managing the finances).
Worked out well.

I think what the real rub is with Selleck and his hocking the Reverse Mortgages is, like time shares and Pay Day loans. Rent to Own or Advance on annuity schemes, these companies prey on the elderly and poor or poorly educated. Many of them end up in far worse financial condition because they are paycheck to paycheck people and not financially savy savers. It is like treating the drug problems in this country with programs like "safe place injection centers' when what drug users need is to be forcibly institutionalized, cleaned up and re programmed to enter society as useful members of the community rather than the cancer they are. What people in financial distress need is a good kick in the ass and be forced into programs like Dave Ramsey provides, a good commons sense education on living with in their means. Not be lured by celebrities they look up to for the easy fix with a usury rate loan to solve a short term problem that will affect their family tree for decades to come.
