Hi all,

Just wondering if there is any sort of service or website where you can rent somebody else's mooring, if they are not using it for a particular day, or weekend. For instance, I was just in Port Jefferson this past weekend, and there were a bunch of moorings in scenic Mt. Misery Cove that were unused, and I would have loved to hook up to one, and pay the owner/renter so that it's a win-win for all. I'm thinking, like an Air BnB for moorings (or even dock slips!!).

While some moorings are "owned" by individuals, many are yacht club moorings with reciprocal privledges - even "private" moorings sometimes have stipulations that when your not on it the harbormaster can direct people to it/collect fees - much like when you rent a slip, the marina has the right to use it for transients when your not there - you can't "sublet" or "swap" slips with someone else....

I have permission to, and use three different moorings in Port Jeff harbor. All three are owned by friends. The harbor master won't bother you unless someone complains. The exception might be Mt. Misery cove "Pirates cove". There's a sign when you enter that says the moorings are privately owned and are for owners use.

I have been trying to figure out how to get a mooring in PJ Pirates Cove for years... We have a prime mooring in Ziegler 's Cove in Darian CT, I would love to work a swap deal with someone that has one in PJ for a weekend here or there.

Many privately owned moorings are subject to covenants and regulation. These often require vessel registration and proof of insurance to be allowed to slip there even if the owner says you can tie up there..
