I haven’t been there since Tom Wood retired, but I think one of his employees took over. Always happy with results.

Might be good to pick up a spare set of wheels this winter. Have them scanned and mounted. Scan the set you are using and hold them in reserve. I did this when we bought the boat and didn't use them for 7 or 8 years. We hit an unmarked Indian fishing net off Lttle Sable PT and broke a blade off. The spares saved our Sumer of cruising. The guy who bought our boat bought our spares too. He ran the boat aground on his way home from our dock. Probably boating today on the spares. It takes Michigan Wheel about 6 weeks to build a set of propos for our boat. That is a major chunk of our boating season.

So what I am gathering here is, if I damage the props it is unlikely I can buy a set off the shelf and quickly get going? What does a set of props for a 40 foot gasser cost?

I've had props tuned and tweaked by both these services in the Detroit area. I can recommend either. I'm currently running the set by Johnny's and have the Wolverine set as my spares.

That's the Prop Scan in Huron. Thanks, I couldn't remember the name the other night when I posted. I could remember the Owner, and the street, so at least the old memory isn't totally shot.

I am hoping I just picked up a net or rope or something... I had vibration through 1,400 to 1,700rpm then it was pretty much gone above that. Plus like I said I didn't feel it or see anything....
I hit a wood pallet last year just below the surface ...it made a horrible noise and broken sticks everywhere and no damage to the boat or running gear at all..
I went to Walmart today to buy a pair of goggles to check the prop out ..... Just so you know Walmart is sold out of goggles...so On the clearance aisle I picked up some big kid goggles with LED lights around the lenses that are suppose to light up what's in front of you .... Should be a spectacle

If it's the Port Clinton Walmart - they're always out of everything.

 

So swam down to take a look and a lot of wood splinters were stuck in the cutlass bearing. The water was murky at best so will pull it out tomorrow to take a closer look.... The prop is not obviously damaged by feel.. So goal is get it out and back in asap

 

My previous owner bought a used set for the boat after he lost a 10 day vacation when he messed up a prop. I bought the used set from him for a lot cheaper than I could have bought them after he refused to add them to the deal.
You can start looking for a used set with correct diameter and shaft and if it's within 2" of pitch (closer is better) you can have it repitched and balanced for around $800 - $1000.
I actually now run on the spare set all the time, they're better props than the originals.
I carry them along with everything I need to change them when traveling. They're home when I'm local.

 

The new set of Acme's the previous owner put on my boat were right at $3800. Wish he would have kept the original set....

 

The boat came out today. The prop looks really good nothing noticeable at all. The wood packed in the strut was significant and took a while to get out of there a toothpick at a time. With the wood in there the prop was very hard to turn...once I took the wood out the prop spun freely. I was really concerned something was bent...so that was a relief.

Took both props to North Coast Prop scan in Huron, Ohio. Brought the power washer and cleaned the hull and water line. I am out until next week so going to wax the blue and some other odd jobs...

 

I guess it's a photography illusion but one blade looks like a chunk is out of it at the hub and the blade edge bend forward quite a bit.

 

The prop looks to be in original condition... A couple of scuffs that's it....

 

Are the bearings original? Are they in good shape? Now may be the time as long as it’s on the hard.

 

Yes I had the mechanic there to check everything out. After I got the wood out and he got the props off we checked out both cutlass bearings and they are in great shape.

Got the bottom power washed in between lightning storms

 

I'm trying to learn here so please bare with me. I'm guessing it would be a good idea to thoroughly inspect the strut mounting in the bilge while she's on the hard and possibly retorque the attaching hardware then I would think checking coupler alignment would be imperative once she's back in the water for a day or 2?

 

I bet Frank would tell us to check shaft runout also. Although in a lathe would optimal, checking in the boat can't hurt.

There was no reason to check runout after the wood was out but I brought a dial indicator with me so just checked for the hell of it and it was good after the cutlass

 

Where did you mount the dial indicator?

 

Update... I pick up the props tomorrow. It turns out both were knocked around some... so both were scanned and repaired. Here is the info before and after for the port prop....both props are identical... Should be a nice ride now.

I like the initiative! It should not take 2 cases to install, but then again......

 

The quickest turn-around is going to be thru your prop shop who is likely a dealer for one or more name brand props or Flounder pounder who bought a box car load of props from Sea Ray in the fall. But, freight from Merritt Island is probably going to be a killer.
