pronautic 1230p on a 02 sundancer 310 fuses and breakers inline with the batteries?

Hello all,

I am doing an installation of a new battery charger on my 2002 Sundancer 310. I have searched the forums and talked to Pro Mariner. Everyone claims there are fuses that are in line with my batteries on this boat that need to be upgraded (going from a 20 amp charger to a 30 amp). The only thing I see both in Sea Ray's diagram and on the boat are 2 breakers (AC Converter 1 and AC Converter 2). Has anyone else installed this charger on this boat and replaced these fuses? They're supposed to be within 6-7 inches of the batteries but I see nothing but big ole battery wire there. I don't really see a reason why there would be breakers in this configuration and then fuses as well, it seems a bit redundant.

Any insight would be great.

Thanks

The breakers for the charger (converter #1, #2) are on the power panel next to the battery switches. There are no other fuses for the battery side of the charger.

There is also an AC side breaker which is already 10amps which should be more than enough for going from a 20 to a 30 amp charger.

It sure doesn't look like there are any fuses or fuse-able links according to that diagram. And you are correct, no need for fuses when breakers are installed and they clearly marked as being there. You might need to increase the break size to accommodate the new 30A capacity.

While your in there though, I would move the charging wires from the batteries, if in fact that's where they are connected, to the battery side of the battery switch. Makes for a safer easier setup. JMO.

There absolutely are fuses in line on the wires that go to the batteries. I replaced my Promarine 30A with a Pronautic 40A and did not initially upgrade the fuses (which are time delay by the way). I had the house bank fuse blow and did not notice until the bank was dead as a doornail. When I found the issue, I also noticed that the fuse holder had melted and part of the wire feed has also melted on the charger side of the fuse. So you may want to consider upgrading the wiring while you are at it.

The fuses are large in-line and if I recall are right up near the battery isolator. I think the charger output goes into a bundle of wires and then exits right before the isolator, which then feeds direct to the batteries. I don't have a picture or I would post it.

I had no fuses when I replaced my 20amp Guest with a ProMariner 1240P. I upgraded the breakers to 50 amp per their instructions and 1.5 years later, everything is great! My schematic showed no fuses either.

Maybe at some point, SR went 100% with the breakers and got away from the fuses????

Re: pronautic 1230p on a 02 sundancer 310 fuses and breakers inline with the batteri

So I have upgraded the 2 breakers to 40 amp breakers (per pro mariner instructions) and my wire gauge is adequate for the 30 amp charger. I have been out the past two nights on the boat at the dock and watched it pump 30 amps into the banks while showing 14.6 volts (I didn't get the remote which tells which bank but I assume stb side since that's where the "house" is). I've read a few threads on here and it seems most of the mid to late 90s boats had fuses so maybe Sea Ray switched over to breakers after that. I looked all around again at the wires tonight and felt the loomed portion near the batteries it's all thick 8g or so wire. I don't think Sea Ray would put fuses or fusible links into that under the loom although I wouldn't be surprised. My logic now is I think with the full 30 amps going into the batteries I would have had a fuse blow by now. I guess when I go out this weekend and am away from the dock that will be when I find out for sure if everything is still working haha.

Note: The threads I read on here where folks described fuses were mostly the 97 330 models and some 98-99 310 models.

I appreciate everyone's help. It seems all these boats are slightly different.

On the 400DA there are breakers behind the main power panel in the cockpit. These are between the batteries and charger/converter. To access you have to unscrew and pull out the entire panel. I discovered these when I pulled the panel to add an accessory breaker for something else.

My boat is configured the same way except the breakers are a different style and integrated into the main panel. I just upgraded them and seem to be set.
