WOW What a difference.. A few weeks ago I went the the NY Boat show and bought 4 JL MX650's. I hooked them up and it sounded great. Not great enough..lol I went to my local shop and bought a JL sub amp with a MX 10" sub and a volume control. I used 3/4 Pressure treated ply to re-enforce the fiberglass with some gorilla calk. Installed the amp under the cabin couch. I installed 2 100hz High pass filters on the amp feeding the outside. All I can say is what a difference. I'm even using the stock deck with the stock amps. I'll be rockin out this summer......Here are some pics..

Any of you ever install 2? I have another output on the amp..Can't let it go to waste...lol. I just cant see another place it would fit.

I went so far as to run an extra pair of wires for the future "second sub". After a few outings with the single 10" JL I realized two would not be needed. At least not for my style....

One good sub in a cockpit of this size is probably more than enough for most people?

Did you use only one channel for the sub? If so you can bridge the leftover channel and really give the sub a punch I did this on my JL sub works awesome .subs like power.

The sub has a pass thru. I used one channel in, pass thru out to existing amp.

Careful - it is a slippery slope. I started with swapping out 4 speakers for JL. Then I added a JL lb10 sub under the front seat and canned speakers facing aft from the tower. Then I added 2 Wetsounds Rev 10s facing aft and turned the JLs toward the bow. I then added a JL lb12 sub. I think I am done! It was a good investment - I no longer need any fuel. I simply propel the boat with the stereo.

JL sub amp
I have another output on the amp
What amp model do you have? If its a mono amp, it only has 1 chnl, although it may have 2 positive and 2 negative terminals, its still a mono, or single chnl amp. Those terminals are parallel internally. This is the same as if you just wired a second driver to the same terminals of the original driver. Since your original woofer is likely 4 ohm, you will be safe to wire a 2nd 4 ohm identical woofer to the amp. All JL amps are at least stable down to 2 ohm.

Given the location of that new woofer, id shy away from a 2nd, unless it was going to be in an entirely different part of the boat, like the salon. If you want more bass, you are better off going with the 12"IB woofer and drive it at about 600W rms.

I installed a 10" JL in our boat along with 6.5" speakers and an 8 channel amp. My neighbor had me help install two...two...8.8 JL speakers and amp.

My next boat will have 8.8's.

Installed a JL 12" W7 AE with a JL HD 750/1 amp to drive it. I fabricated a ported box with the appropriate sq/ft for the sub and a support, cut the top out of the cockpit bench seat and reinforced the hole with a stainless plate under the seat. Vented the sub out the back between the seat cushion and backrest. The sub weighs 52#. Added to JL HD 600/4 to drive drive 8 JL 7.7's and 4 JL m100's in billet pods around the cockpit of my 400.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I cannot say enough good things about JL Audio. I just finished installing (4) M770's and (1) M10 sub in my cockpit. I'm pushing those speakers (plus another 10" bazooka tube hidden under the rear U-lounger) with their M800/8 amp.

All I can say is... WOW. What a difference over the 10-year old factory stuff.

I also added a pair of the M880's in tower enclosures bridged off of an M400/4 amp to the radar arch pointing forward to entertain the bow.

Worth. Every. Cent.

Now I all I need is for the snow to melt so that I can hit the water!

Yes, I really like the JL stuff too. Like I said, the 12" W7 sub I have weighs 52 lbs. that is some significant engineering. In addition, their website is very useful and the even respond quickly to email questions. Generally, the same day. Top notch in my book. I have a Hummer H2 I am thinking about building a system in and I have thought about giving Focal a shot, but I am so impressed with JL I don't think I can do it.

I just put a 10" bazooka tube under my rear U-lounge. Seems to compliment the 10" JL that I put in the factory location on my 48 well. It's the only non-JL component I've used. The two are powered by the M400/4. Lots of bump even with the gain set at a fairly low/mid level (which is a good thing.) Pics to come soon.
