Hello,

My fire extinguisher in the engine room of my 2004 260DA is in the red and in need of replacement / recharge. I attempted to take the unit off, but couldn't get the cable system off? I am sure I just don't know what the heck i'm doing. My unit has a cable you can pull at the helm to discharge.

Any tips or suggestions - I did manage to put the safety pin in before messing with anything! I hear that powder is a MESS!!!

You may want to contact an extinguisher service. I don't believe that the the ER system is powder. I seem to recall that it is a heavier than air gas. There can be a safety risk if there is still gas in the tank and you set it off while in the engine compartment.

I know there are services in my area that will pull it out and recharge it. It's not too expensive. I would suggest looking for vendors who can perform the service. They'll need to recharge it anyways.

OMG I just call sea-fire - my unit is not rechargeable and holds hylon? Apparently it gets cold to put out the fire and is now a banned chemical. A new replacement is over $600 and if I exchange my old tank it is $350. Crap!!!! Ill try some local companies but Sea fire says they don't have anyone in MI that services them!!

I was concerned about the system on my '08 330 as well. Got the same answer from Sea-Fire. The problem is getting a qualified tech to do the swap. For regulatory reasons, the new tank must have a certificate on it, placed there when the swap is done, documenting it was done by a licensed tech. In Arizona it's an issue getting a tech out to the boat. For most of us, trailering a boat to get the system upgraded is out of the question. MarineMax is of no help in this matter. They do not have the expertise nor the certification. Besides, it's a big liability if things go wrong.

Take your boat over to North Shore Marina. They will know exactly what to do with it.
