Engine quit, but now works ???

I was underway saturday in the gulf, and when I came off of plane, the port engine quit. I have the twin 4.3's, and they are throttle body injected. I tried to fire it back up, and it idled for a few seconds, and died again. For the next 2 hours, as I was limping home at 4 mph, I tried to start the engine every few minutes, and it did the same; idled, then died. I tried playing with the throttle while cranking, and the results were sporatic, but it would never run for more than a few seconds. I know it sounds like a fuel problem, but I could smell raw gas.

The next morning they both fired right up, I ran along on plane close to the shore for a few hours, and not a problem.

I was thinking TPS, and still may replce it, but my marina mechanic said he has never seen a bad one in 12 years. If my typical luck applies, this will be his first.

Any suggestions? I do not wish to have this happen again, but can't find a problem that does not exist.

I do not feel it is a vapor lock issue, but that is a good suggestion. I had this happen last year, and it would not start for 3 days. I replaced the distributor pickup, and it fired right up. I thought it was fixed until now. The batteries are all less than two months old, and were fully charged. The engine spun over as normal.

Maybe it would be a good idea to revisit that distributor and perhaps replace that pickup again.

Yes, the fuel filters were replaced a couple of months ago. I am thinking it almost impossible to have two unrelated problems that cause the same thing on the same engine. I am looking further into the distributor pickup. What is strange is that it works perfectly, or not at all, there is no in beween. does anyone know much about the distributor pickup? A friend told me that there were 2 parts, the spark module, and the pickup, anyone know about this? I was not the one who changed the pickup, and have never had it apart.

Can everyone help me come up with things that would allow the boat to spin over, and not start. So far all I can come up with is; wiring harness, computer, tps, dist pickup.

There is a sensor in the back of the throttle body that I have never noticed before on an automobile. It is just behind the IAC Valve. Anyone know what this is? I cannot find a diagram.

Maybe a stupid question, but does the boat have a kill switch lanyard? If so, if its going bad, you can grind the starter all day and she won't fire. If you suspect its bad, temporarily bypass it and see if the boat will start.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no it does not have a kill switch lanyard. I am trying to make a list of parts now that I can carry on the boat with me. I don't want to start throwing parts at it, and just hope it is fixed. I have decided to cary along the parts I think it may be, and then wait for it to do it again, and try to fix it immediately.

what about spark. I had a 2001 yesterday that I popped the motor off before I put it in to the water, then when I put it in the water it would start for a second and stall like a fuel problem but it was actually the coil had a slight crack in it. when was cranking over you can see the spark jumping out of the coil to the ground side.
