I removed mine permanently. I thought it made everything look dated and I knew I'd never use a paper chart. Here is what it looked like before I removed it:

 

Thank you Hawk. That answered the question of hinge above or below. I know it's a throwback feature, but having my local NOAA chart under there looks "nautical."

 

You're welcome. I was tempted to do the same thing. I figured it would end up getting wet under there and up being a pain to keep clean so I decided against it.
