Hi everyone!

We are in Alexandria, VA and boat out of Cambridge, MD and started out two years ago with a new Sea Ray 2007 195 Sport Bowrider. We were totally new to boating and started too small! At the end of the season we traded it in for a 2006 250 Amberjack. We love it because its so manageable and is not as tippy as some of the sundancers. But we may be looking to trade up again for next year so that we can cruise a bit further out and have the shorepower. I would love to hear any recommendations for two rather new boaters who want to explore the Chesapeake Bay and the rivers off of it.

We are thinking a used 260 or 280 (if I can get used to the high center of gravity) and BOY! that 2009 270 is something to behold... just a shame its new so there are no "used" on the market!

Nice to meet everyone!

I would recommend going larger than you're thinking. A great all around boat is the 320 Sundancer. i would suggest you look at a used 2006 or 2007, it has twins for a quality ride and just a great cruiser.

I am going to be in the market for one within a year, and prices should be getting better with the economic situation.

Good Luck

I completely agree with those who say buy bigger and buy used. I'd rather have a well maintained larger used boat than a smaller new one. Just make sure you have a very good surveyor check it over (not all surveyors are good). Also, don't be intimidated by size as far as handling. If you feel comfortable on the water and take your time, a larger boat is not too hard to move up to.

Another consideration is the style. Cruisers are great for small family accomodations and getting around the bay in a reasonable time. But if you have a larger family or anticipate having friends and family stay overnight on the boat, sedan bridges and aft cabins might be a better choice.

Look at as many boats as you can before you choose. Best of luck. Boat safe.
