Option 1: Call the police and ask them what to do.

Option 2: Leave it with the store clerk and let them handle it. Sounds like you don’t trust people so this may not be your option of choice.

Option 3: Just walk away. Not your money. Not your problem to solve.

What I would not do is take the money and try to solve the problem myself. You have no idea what the circumstances of the situation are. Could be anything from a legit situation to an elaborate scam.

 

I wouldn't try that in a small town.

 

Maybe someone was paying it forward, would be a shame to reject their gift. Keep it.

 

My wife was in Canada last week, stopped at a casino for a while. She found a couple hundred bucks on the floor. She went to customer service people and told them where she found the money. Security was able to review tapes, identify the person that lost it.

Another time she was at a gas station and found a hundred dollar bill on the floor. She gave it to the person working the cash register. A couple days later a guy came into her office and gave her a thank you and a 50 dollar bill.

 

I would ask to talk to the manager, and give them the money. Chances are somebody is running around town desperately trying to remember where they left their money.

 

The bank that operates the ATM knows exactly who and when the ATM was used. They can easily contact who used the ATM before your friend and query about the lost funds. I'd call the bank to make sure grandma could get the money back.

 

Most modern ATMs will retrieve the cash if not removed within a certain amount of time.

Take the $200, buy 8 cases of Bud Light and leave it at the ATM. This way you helped the convenience store, the rural towns Bud Light distributor, who’s probably going broke…….someone will get free beer.

 

8 cases? $200 would buy 50 cases after the sale price I saw a few weeks ago. After instore discount, price was $4 per case.

I was at bowling tonight and went to get some mega millions tickets from the machine. Right beside it was 2 unscratched scratch off $10 tickets. Took them up to the counter to hand them over. Turns out they apparently just scanned the bar codes and never scratched them. One was a winner but was already paid out but they didn't know how much

 

ATM films all transactions. You will be know for what you do. If you put your card in they know all about you. Big Brother is watching.

 

I don't need the money, and it's not mine. I'd probably inform the counter person, bank, or both.

Was at a OSU football game at the Shoe in Columbus, Ohio......90k drunken football fans. Ascending the steps in the crowd to our seats, I saw a woman's purse under my feet....scooped it up. Got to our level and examined it. Loaded with all her money, credit cards, drivers license...you get it. She had an unusual last name so I found her on Facebook with my phone. I called her through Facebook (yes that is a thing...who knew?) and she answered....could barely hear her with the crowd noise but told her "I have you purse!".......the level of jubilation when she arrived at our seats with the stadium security dudes was next level. Maybe I'll get into heaven.
