Do they have to be the steel mesh? Wouldn't a good quality home filter work?

 

I suppose they would. Do you just buy and cut to fit?

I've been using these filters for several years now. They are the best thing. There is a noticeable reduction in dust in the boat since we ditched the mesh screens.

The filter in the pix attaches to the unit. Mine attaches inside the vent opening. Would it make a difference?

 

If you look closely, your unit probably has tracks on the face of the condenser to accept a filter.

My salon unit is like yours, with a filter in the intake grill. The fwd system has the screen on the condenser. The former is a MUCH better design because only filtered air is drawn into the compartment. I have to regularly vacuum under the berth because dusty air is constantly circulated in there.

That brings up another question. I clean the mesh screen about every 30 days. At $23 (+ shipping I assume?) for the Breathe Easy and 2 units, am I looking at $50 a month for filtered air? I could probably hire a maid to come in and dust for that!

 

We don't change our filters every month. Our a/c runs every day during the month of July and it does get dirty but also more efficient at filtering dust. The air gets less intense use in other months beginning in April and ending in October. Over a six month period we use two of them and that works for us. They are expensive but do work better than any of the many different types we've tried over many years.

One of my friends is a Trane Tech and he always tells me to just but a cheap mesh filter and replace frequently. He notes that the more a screen filters smaller particles, the harder the AC unit has to work to pull in air. So far he has been spot on. He also replaces a lot if units that have had a shortened life use to unit working overtime. That said these are house units, but I would think it's all relative.

Depending on the size of screen, you may be able to go to Home Depot or Lowes and find a range hood screen that is the right size or could be cut to fit. They usually have a large selection of shapes and sizes. For example:

I like this idea, then add a little duct tape to the sides so it slides in and out of the track easily.
