We don't have our own thread like all the other losers... So now we do. Let's try and collect all the 480 DB specific posts over the last few years and put links here for them... and we can bash all those low-life Sundancer owners...

And post pictures of the best boat Sea Ray ever designed...

Here's some pictures mistercomputerman (mister shiny boat) sent me of the most awesome 480 DB in the world.

Cruising on the manly Chesapeake:

OK... I just wanted to post these awesome pictures... but we do need a thread dedicated to this most wonderful beast.

How do you guys like the DB's with the helm at the back of the bridge? I don't think I would like that. I'm not very tall (ok, very short) and it looks like I'd have to stand on the seat to drive - again.

#17 ·
I can see the bow and anchor sitting down in the captain's chair. I prefer the forward seating for two reasons... People are sitting in front of me so I can be part of the conversation going on and I can see the back of the boat and cockpit -> great for docking and fishing.

I thought those of us who were fortunate enough to have more girth and length would not need a seperate thread to flaunt it. I figured we could just quietly sit back and bask in our hugeness. Gary has now let the cat out of the bag.

I'm with you Tim - someday for us too. But for now all I can say to Gary is..."BASTARD"... With all due respect! Oh - and thanks for taking the time to put all those links together.

Is a braw standard fare for the 480 DB? ; )

The 480 DB is a fantastic boat, and definitly one of the nicest looking Sea Ray's out there. Also a popular boat, saw five of them in St. Michaels alone last weekend.

Gary - with the grand hard top on the DB's, why do you roll rather than snap up the canvas (ie. the pic in my sig)?

I'm installing a couple snaps on the top this weekend for the fwd panel. Looked at the side panels but wasnt sure 2 snaps along the bottom edge would do it. do you have more snaps and are they installed along the bottom edge only?

probably a dumb question, how do you like the MANS? I have a buddy that just sold his '04 560 a couple weeks ago. it had the 1050s...cruised at 33, WOT topped 40mph. I couldnt get over how much the boat lurched when put in gear. if you werent holding on or ready for it, you'd go flying. loved the red night lighting on the bridge too.

saw gary's post on another thread to a gen problem. want to investigate a bit further as I've had a similiar thing happen twice now. Gen has quit twice for no apparent reason. first occurance, was on a trip so mains & gen had run all day--very hot ER as well as a 90+ degree day. 2nd time, went down on 95 degree Sunday afternoon, had ran atleast 9-10 hrs straight and darn near non-stop from Friday evening.

No oil p, exhaust temp, or water flow alarms either time. plenty of water pumping; no steam. lift pump vdc ok and 'clicking'. it would start but immediately shut down, just like fuel was being shut off.

on first occurance, 3-4 hrs later, it started and ran for another day and a half (again, was on a trip) like nothing ever happened. 2nd time, when I returned to the boat the following Fri prep'd to change filters, re-check fuel pump, check safety switches, etc, it started & ran fine. last 2 weekends, its ran nearly continuously fri-sun in some pretty hot weather but no more shutdowns.

I'm now suspecting fuel line from racor. again, no pressure/temps alarms, so it has to be fuel starvation...or air flow restriction (did change air filter)?

is there a situation that happens that may be temp dependant where the fuel system pulls more than the line can provide--a vaccum on the line--possibly collapsing it to a point a fuel restriction occurs? or getting air in the lines somewhere?

My generator had similar symptoms last year but had gotten to the point where it wouldn't start. I had it looked at by the local Cummins service techs and what they found surprised me. The fuel supply line from the tank to the Racor had collapsed. The tech told me he had never seen such a high vacuum on the Racor canister. Line replaced, problem solved, genny has run flawlessly all summer (I probably shouldn't say that!!)

Seriously, It's a great boat. I've seen Mad Dog's (haven't seen him post much in the last year) boat and it's great. I still think the 450DA is my style, but who knows by the time I can ever step up that far.

#33 ·
I had a 2001 400db with 430 cummins and in 2004 bought a new 480 db. Its been a great boat with next to no trouble. I do have monthly service by a local diesel mechanic and I keep it on a lift. It cruises at 31mph burning 45 gph which isn't to bad for a boat this size. I run it year round being in Florida. Advantages over the 400DB- Enclosed bridge with hard top and AC, 3rd stateroom, bow thruster and tnt lift. Cons-just going to cost you afew more bucks.

#36 ·
i too moved from 00 400DB to this 01 480DB. steve pretty much captured it in a few words. although "...a few more bucks" may be understating it a tad. everything seems to be quite a bit more $$...spares, maintenance, etc. plus, alot more to keep clean above and below decks so dont forget your time. but, wow, these big girls really run...its addicting.

c'mon turtle, i see the owners club envy here...you cant hide it.
