240 SD Speddometer not working

I have a 2001 240 SD. Last year everything worked fine until I ran it into a submerged sandbar which was not there the year before. The engine over heated since one of the risers was packed with sand. Had that fixed. This year, first time out, the speedometer did not work. I cannot find a shop manual for this boat, because Searay didn't think it neccessary to make one (WTF?, not even a wiring diagram). Does anyone know how the speddometer system on these boats works? Is the input sensor a pitot tube or a spinning wheel? Where is it located? Could the mechanic who repaired my boat neglected to hook it back up? Any information about this system would be most appreciated.

I have been impressed about the quality of the owner's manuals for SR. They even include a wiring diagram. However, may be hard to come by for a 24 year old boat unless the previous owner saved it.

Look at the back of the guage....a wire or a tube?

Look at the transom....bare or a pitot tube.

Is it an outboard? Look at the engine for a tube.

If I had to guess I would say a pitot since paddle wheels are usually confined to jet boats. They are fantastic and work well. But there cannot be a leak in the tube. Easy to troubleshoot. First find out what you have.

it's not Sea Ray's responsibility to provide "how to's". To my knowledge, no boat manufacturer provides a service manual. However, Sea Ray does print one of the better owner's manuals out there. They even go as far as to provide it online for those that didn't keep their originals.

However, you COULD buy a MERCRUISER service manual.

But, with a tiny bit of googling you could find out that your pitot is likely clogged. It's basically a tube from the pitot hole to gauge. It works via water and air pressure.

Unclog it. Verify the system works via the quick-connect above the anti-vent plate and then unclog from there back to the pitot hole.

It's a stupidly simple system and very easy to fix.

I have an owner's manual & parts catalog for the boat, and a service manual for the engine. But no service manual (although I did find a supplement [to what?]) nor even a wiring diagram? I asked a couple dealerships what their mechanics used. Nothing, the factory certified SeaRay mechanics have to figure every boat out from scratch. That's just stupid.

The river is well above flood stage & vehicles can't get to the boat ramp now. But looking at the back of the gauge should tell me. If it's a pitot tube, I'll bet that it's plugged with sand because the last thing I did last year was to run aground on a submerged sand bar that was not supposed to be where it was. I don't recall seeing a paddle wheel, so that's prolly it. I'll fix it next time it comes out of the water.

It has an Alpha outdrive. I had bottom paint put on earlier this year because algae really slowed the boat down after it'd been in the water a month last year when I got it.

Thank you all very much, I think I've got this figured out now.

If the drive was painted too it may have plugged the inlet hole

I had the bottom paint done by a boat shop, they certainly wouldn't have painted over it. And I did run hard onto a sandbar last year. It plugged my rt. side exhaust riser & caused me major problems. It just about has to be a pitot tube plugged with sand. Thanks for the thought though.

Belercous, the wiring diagram (for the boat side of things) is DEFINITELY in the owner's manual. Plus, Sea Ray data codes every single wire and it matches up to the wiring diagrams. It's very good. Mechanics use it all the time - although after many years of experience, it's often not needed anymore.

Mercruiser also makes excellent wiring diagrams available to the certified dealers.

A pitot is VERY easy to paint over by mistake.

However, you haven't told us if the speedo was working after the paint but before the run-a-ground?

I would love to get a SeaRay 240 SD owner's manual, but 2 different SeaRay dealers told me they don't make one for my boat. (&Their mechanics don't have access to the wiring diagram.) SeaRay offers owner's & shop manuals for other boats, but not mine. (All I could get was a supplement.) It would be great customer service if they did have one. Why SeaRay would have downloads available for the parts catalog & a supplement, but not an owner's manual doesn't make sense.

I have done a lot of searching & asking, all to no avail. Any idea where I could find one?

Sea Ray doesn't have a shop manual. Owner's/supplements only.

Did you look through your supplement? Are there wiring diagrams in it? The supplement is more specific to your boat than a generic owner's manual.

On the front side of the outdrive there is a very very small hole that water goes through it may have gotten plugged up with sand look at the front of your outdrive that faces towards your boat. Between the outdrive and the transom there is a hole in your outdrive

I boat in the river so there is always something floating in the water. Even looking for them you can't always see them so the pitot hole gets plugged often. After cleaning it out 3 times out of three trips to the river I gave up when I broke the drill off in the pitot hole of the outdrive. I ran for a few seasons without a speedometer but I had someone talking like they wanted to buy my boat & knowing that to get a good price everything had to work. So I was in the boat shop for their spring open house & was a plastic pitot tube replacement, I bought it.
Now if I hit something it just pushes it back & the next time I stop I just push it back into place. Here is my replacement.

I boat in weedy / dirty waters and have had a pitot tube speedometer since 1968. My old woodie has a circa 1952 pitot tube that still works perfectly. Back in the day when "Powerboats Magazine" was doing boat tests they always said that name brand Pitot speedometers worked very well, to +- 1 mph. Nuff said. They ain't all that bad.

They provide a water speed, as opposed to a GPS that gives speed over ground. My river has a current of 16 mph in some places. If I go upstream at 16 mph my pitot show 16 while the GPS shows 0 mph. But I realize that may be hard to understand.

In all my years I have only had pitots fail because the hose lost its seal, at one end or another. Never had one plug, but if it did, simply remove the hose, add a short piece and blow it out. Then, of course, seal the hose back up. At worst, buy a new pitot. If you can't blow it out drilling it out ain't such a good idea.

Downloaded the owner's manual supplement (I do not know why I swore I had it, but I didn't) & it has the wiring diagram. I dunno why those dealers told me their mechanics didn't have them, but there it is (at least for my model & year).

Thanks for all your help guys. I have an unrelated question, so I'm gonna open a new thread.
