My heater or AC when it's turned on during the summer hours, makes a very strange noise but works just fine. It's pretty loud and goes constantly from a low to high noise about every 2 seconds. Kinda like revving an engine, then taking your foot off the pedal. I know that's a horrible way to describe it, but it's loud.. too loud. Even though it works, I still would rather replace the part if it will mean the sound will go away. I was thinking this may be normal, but the sound seems to be coming from the large cylinder to the right of the unit that's standing straight up. Any ideas?

I know that I described the sound strangely but does it sound kinda like that? Surely this isn't normal. Could just be wear and tear over time and being a 13 year old unit. Assumptions, of course.

Yep, thats the compressor. Look very closely at the mounting bushings. If they are ok (you may have to remove the entire assembly) you may have a compressor getting ready to fail. Also make sure nothing is rattling up against the compressor.

To be honest, you really think mounting bushings would cause the fluctuation in sound? Lets pretend that it needs to be replaced because its getting ready to go. Where can I get one?

Very possible. Ours has been like that since we bought the boat in 2011. Heat and AC make same noise.

Works like a charm -- just sounds god awful....
Yes, I agree. It works.. well. I'd rather spend the money and replace the unit if that awful sound goes away. I can't even watch TV with it turned ALL the way up!

If its worth $1200 or so for the new unit to you :) go for it. I'm waiting for death... Especially since my unit is under the stairs in the '98.

Although, our water outlet is showing rust, so I'd suspect I'll be replacing next season...
Just the compressor = $1,200? Good grief.. Surely it isn't that much. I can understand the whole unit being that much.

With that unit, you generally do not just replace the compressor. It's not a financially smart move (what I've been told).

I'm sure others on here have more experience. Watching this unfold though as I'm in the same spot.

Bill
Just looked it up with help from the general discussion board, to replace = $2,600 online.
