Stuart, that's good to know about the ice maker, thanks. I can't imagine what's wrong with your couch but it's a simple mechanism, I assume you checked the obvious?

I too returned Monday after 18 days off the dock, loved every minute. I only had two issues and one complaint. My vent window just stopped working and I got really tired of having to go into the motor room to start and stop the genny. I have a starting issue from the panel that I have not fixed yet. I didn't think it was a big deal until about the tenth time. And my complaint is the 100 gallon water tank and how quickly it goes. It amazes me that the tank is so small. All relatively minor in the scheme of things, overall she performed flawlessly although we only put 4 hours on the mains and 150 on the genny, staying on a mooring in Block Island then to New London CT for sailfest and tall ships.

Hi Russ

Glad you had a great trip, but why so many hours on the genset? Were you running the air con a lot of that time?

I have fitted new domestic batteries that are rated at 460 amp hours, and when we head out for 14 days on anchor the week after next, I am hoping that the gennie will only need about 4 hours a day to keep the batteries up, although we won't normally be running the air con, the fridges and water pumps are the main users of electric.

I have recently changed all the light bulbs to LEDs and that has made a massive reduction in power needs.

How many people did you have on board and how long did the water last? We can usually get 5 days with 4 people on board, and then a quick trip into the nearest Marina for a refill. I might take a flexi tank with us on the front of the deck, it holds another 35 - 40 gallons which we can transfer to the main tank as the level goes down.

Graham,

Between the fridge and ice maker the batteries would hold up for most of the day but the voltage was low. We would run the genny all night more for AC and TV (sat). The benefit was a full ice bucket, cold fridge and fully charged batteries every morning and after breakfast I would shut her down. The genny uses very little fuel and I'm told it was made to run all the time. With little more than 300 hours it has not had much use to date. The lights made little difference, I changed to all LED on my 370, it was expensive and a pain but made sense because of the gas genny. Part of my reason for buying diesel was the ability to run so I am not planning to change to led. However it may be helpful to know the bulbs and source you used, do you have a list?

Graham, Russ,

I am in the process of converting to LED as well. I have found the MR11 bulbs seem to work well for the overhead Cantalupi "David" fixtures in the front and aft cabins. Did you find the same? I used 18 LED G4 bulbs in the two aft head fixtures and the forward shower. Seems to work well. Used 10 LED disc G4 in the salon and cockpit "spoiler". Festoons were used in the cockpit floor fixtures and these seem to really cut the power draw.

Also Stuart was having issues with the icemaker. Mine cycles and works fine (it is defrosted and dried out weekly) but it leaks down the inside back of the tray. After a couple of days there is a considerable ice dam created around the try. Any suggestions to stop the leak? I have had it apart once but may have to play with this again.

Enjoy your boating!

Walker Bay Genesis Deluxe 340. A 30 hp Nissan four stroke. GHS hydraulic platform.
I take it mostly everywhere but on a longer trip (500 miles) I might leave it behind to gain a bit of speed and efficiency.

Hi Guys

Nice to see the 460 forum busy again.

Russ, I use a Walker Bay 270 with a Yamaha 13.5HP two stroke on a GHS platform, wonderful assets on the boat, wouldn't be without on any trip.

We don't have an icemaker, not a big "must have" in Europe, but there is a small cockpit drinks fridge in its place.

I bought all the LED bulbs, about 45 in total, from Ebay. Quality seems fine, small units (about 36 of them) that had about 9 LEDs per unit for the main bulbs, I had to cut the pins a bit shorter, and they had to be put in the correct polarity otherwise they did not go, and I recall that the spoiler light units needed two of these bulbs each. I used 16 LED festoons for the others, some 32 / 35mm long and some 42mm long. These were for the cockpit lower lights and the stairway lights inside.

Total cost on Ebay was about $115. I do recall when I did my 400DA about 4 years ago, it cost about 5 times as much. I will try and put together the listings that I bought from, and will post or PM you Russ.

I have found so far that by fitting much bigger Domestic / starboard batteries, the need for the gennie is very little, I am now going to add a small ( 500w / 700w)inverter for the televisions to operate off.

We really don't need the aircon when on the hook, there is always a light breeze blowing through the boat, and that is enough to keep the temperature reasonable.

Russ, I have run into this issue too. Lightly tap on the vent window motor with the back of screw driver or small hammer. The window has a tendency to stop working if the window is open all the way sometimes. I am betting this is your problem too, I have seen it on two of my friends 460's.

WE CARRY 35 EXTRA GALLONS OF WATER IN THE ER. RUSS- What would be the obvious? Connections?

I agree with the water situation and have resorted to carrying an extra 30gallons in the ER in heavy plastic jugs. The admiral likes her shower in the morning....

James- Great info on the LED light bulbs. I think this switch is necessary in the near future.

As far as the ice maker goes, I, too, get a small build-up of ice in the back of the plastic container after a few days. My theory is A) when the gennie is off, the ice in the tray melts and the movement of the boat splashes it down the back of the box. B) the fill line for the tray is set too high. When I had the manual out I read that this could be adjusted. It has not bothered me enough to worry about.

Russ- I'm needing a Dinghy soon. We have a dog and she is 10 and needing to "go" more frequently. I'm looking at 11.5'-12.5' dinghys and since I have the fixed platform will be having a custom mount made using weaver "shoes" and starboard horizontal mounts. I may end up fabbing an electric winch in the stern locker to assist in bringing the dinghy up the 24" to the swim platform. Care to share your thoughts?
Smooth waters...

Actually this weekend I checked it out and found that at the switch I was only getting about 8 volts at the 12 v feed. When I put 12v to it it worked fine. So I'm not sure why the voltage drop but I ran 12 v to it and it's working, not the best solution but I have no idea where the source is. Thanks for the input.

Yes, connections, obstructions, lube and look at the motor mount- is it solid? Or is it twisting?
Yeah, water is def an issue

Keep us posted if you will on your davit solution, I am very interested. I'm thinking about Nautly Davits until I can afford the platform.

Great info on the LEDs guys, thanks for all the info, it will be helpful to many I'm sure. Lots of good activity, I hope everyone is enjoying the summer and their boats.

Ok, admittedly, this may be a bit of a stretch on application, but you may be having the same problems I have been having with my v-berth. Since I am the captain, first mate, crew, cook and bartender there is one position I also hold-Cleaning crew! Every time my wife and I sleep in the v-berth the sheets tend to come off the bed near the head of the bed. This past weekend I found a solution I thought I would share- I pulled the entire mattress down the bed frame about 2' and then secured the sheet and bed pad before sliding the bed back into position and tucking the rest of the sheets down. Granted i have owned the boat over a year now and just figured this annoying trick out! Hope you all sleep well! No reason for sheets loose now!

I thought I was the only one! That drives me crazy!! Pulling it down, tucking it in works? Sounds too simple but I will try anything. My wife bought custom sheets, $300-400?, and they still pop off at the top.

Try it Russ! It worked for me two nights this Past weekend without coming undone!
I use standard quees sheets, though, not the nice ones! ;)
I hope it works for you!

I put a 2" Memory Foam on top of the mattress. Then the mattresses (with sheets on them) have to be jammed under the front header; keeps the sheets from slipping so much. More comfort and the sheets only have to be re-adjusted every fourth or fifth sleep. Certainly not the perfect set-up but it is better.
Another solution to the problem is to change boats. 540DA and 550DA have the master mid stateroom with a walkaround berth.
