Good luck with the 540DA in Oz. It should be quite impressive there.
Too bad about all your cold weather. My daughter lives in Surfer's Paradise, Queensland and sent this photo of her weather. (It's a joke I hope)

Rob,
Delta had Wifi on flight to Alaska. Very cool for the working stiff. Daily rate was 9.95 I believe. Oh well just swipe the company card and started working. Sure helps shorten a 9 hour flight. Now if the battery would last that long. I always carry a spare.

Jaws: definately a joke lol, the Gold coast gets no snow hahah while its definately cooler than usual here and up there it never really gets that cold unless you live in like Canberra :)

Oldskool: I paid the 12 bucks for the 24 hour internet access, had an hour and a half on my first flight and was all happy about it ...then when i hit the ATL to LAX leg there was no wifi on that 4 hour flight ..... nor on the LAX to SYdney flight!!! SO kinda sucked lol paid 12 bucks for like 30 mins of internet access hahahha

Talk about jetlag and exhausted i have had so little sleep its crazy...did not sleep a wink on the flights over, only got 3 hours sleep the night before i left so have 3 hours of sleep in the last like 72 hours!! Totally whacked lol!! 11 pm here and headed to bed finally!! The California is in the Panama canal anchorage, i guess just waiting its turn to cross!! Tomorrow i start on all the paperwork and things that need to be done in preparation for the boats arrival!! Need some kind of permit for the fridge and cockpit ice maker... have to get my bill of lading to USA homeland security.... secure navigation insurance for Australian waters....schedule my Aquis quarantine inspection...get a customs broker and start arranging all the things that nee dto be done...start the process of paying my GST " gift and services tax" ...just a ton to get done in preparation for her arrival!! Well Rob it is all happening for you mate. I have been tracking the california and boy there are a lot of ships waiting to get through the Canal on both sides. I wounder what the average time is for a ship to wait before it gets to enter the Canal?

I have my boat insured with Nautilus, I was going to go with Club Marine but they had some poor policy entitlements and they would not insure Marine Power engines for some reason. They would insure Mercruiser and Crusader 454 engines but not Marine Power, go figure.

Paul: not sure how long they have to wait to pass through...i guess we have to just watch and see...it seems like they are stacked in a line slowly moving forward like 3 ships at a time ...im guessing not long now as the California has moved forwards in position quite a bit since last night!! Thanks to both you and ozzie for the insurance info ... I am sooo tired i cant think straight but already at getting things done ...everyone keeps saying relax catch yourself for a day or two but im a little crazy when it comes to this stuff and just plowing ahead.... getting my recreational boaters license this sunday booked the course.... they pick me up at rosebay 8am and shuttle me to Mossman where you spend like 8 hours getting it all done ...so as of sunday will have my rec boating license and will look into what it takes to get a full on captains license!! My friends family everyone are all very excited about the boats impending arrival ...i cant wait to have my home back and move back onboard...im kind of in limbo now... kind of hard to think when you are this tired lol
Already miss the nice warmth of Florida, kinda weird having to wear jackets and having heaters on after just leaving a tropical climate!! Miss Chris and Janie... will be heading back to FL in about 6 weeks to purchase and ship over a bunch of tenders to resell...have Chris looking now and will have him buy up any good deals until then...dont really ahve to be there to send em over but i want to lol so will fly back for a week when the time comes hahhah want to go in my hot tub damnit!!! And yes its MY hot tub :p

Ok so starting to plan my boat club lol Ozzie. Paul you guys have any interest in being involved? My sis works for the Aussie gov she heads up a division that designs websites for centrelink ...shes going to help me design a kick ass website for it! well she doesnt know this yet but shes gonna help me ahhahaha So yeah let me know if you guy are interested in being involved, the start will be a great website with forums... once i get a community together plan on hosting and organizing events etc....

I heard there is an area in Sydney harbor called Rozelle bay or ws it batemans bay...cant remember which one... where you can anchor and stay on your boat ..apparently theres 30 - 40 boats there now a small community of people all living on their boats.... the berth my cousin has for me is way up the river in Putney or something like that ... so thinking of just going to that community intially anchoring and staying there for a bit then maybe moving the boat to Pittwater as it looks so nice and comes so highly reccomended by Ozzie...anyways just figuring everything out and getting ready for my new life living on the water here in oz!! Exciting times!! Ozzie, Paul where do you guys live? Anywhere near here where we could maybe get together for a beer sometime soon ? If i remember right Paul you dont live in this area right???
Ozzie did you plan on coming along for bringing the boat down to Sydney from NC??? If either of you or both come along what do you think of overnighting in say Pittwater or Port macquary for a day or two on the way down so i can take a peek at what its like??? All food drinks etc on me!

Have a feeling owning and living on a boat here is going to be an amazing life!! I am very excited, will probably do all this for around a year and then sell... pick up another boat in Florida and spend 6 months in the Carribbean :) Hopeful plans anyways lol you have to dream big right!!!!

My uncle is very excited as I told him he can use my boat as his photo studio so hes bouncing off the wall planning all kinds of shoots hahah Paul any ideas where i can buy a Lensbaby for a Minolta prime DSLR cam at the best price around here...or a good website in the states i can order one from??? My uncle is looking for one , asked me to pick one up while in FL but i couldnt find one, figured if anyone here would know where to get it ...that would be you!

Any advice from you guys on how far i should take my captains training??? Ideally what level do you think i should go to? Did anyone check out that navionics iphone chart plotting app??? Its really really good lol

LOL Rob, mate if this is you with lack of sleep then God help the boating community when you are fully awake. I think you need to halve your caffienne intake. LOL

I am still planning on being there for when your boat arrives but need to make sure I don't arrive to soon before it does. Not sure how involved I could be with a boating club as for most of the year I live in the Red Centre of Australia, when we are not here in Alice Springs we are at our holiday home in Port Stephens.

Rob, you need to sit down with a map of Australia and check out the locations of ports and bays, Batemans Bay is on the far south coast of NSW. Port Macquarrie is on the mid north coast of NSW. I think you meant to say Lake Macquarrie which is just a hop, skip and a jump south of Newcastle. It is a saltwater lake system and has a lot of boating traffic on it but mostly blow boats. The Belmont 16 footers is a great club and as the name suggests it is home to the 16 foot blow boat racers. Getting in to Lake Macquarrie means navigating the Swansea bar and channel which can be hazardous if the weather is bad and or the swell is big. I am not sure of the clearance height of the Swansea bridge to gain entry into Lake Macquarrie you need to use the Swansea channel and the bridge spans the channel. Here are the opening times for the bridge.

In order to do your Coxswains Certificate or Master 5 then you need to be able to satisfy the requirments as laid out in this document.

I personally would suggest overnighting in the Pittwater area rather than Lake Macquarrie.

As far as Lensbabies go for Minolta cameras, well I am not an authority on either however here are a couple of the many webstores that are offering them in the states. B&H is probably the best known camera webstore in the USA but you can find many webstores selling these Lensbabies.

I already knew of the Navionics software app for the iPad, however my chartplotter already has the latest Australia mapping and it is connected to my autopilot so I can lay in a course and it will update the autopilot as needed. Still the app is very good and is highly recommended on other forums.

Lastly, welcome home to chilly Sydney. If it is any compensation it is even colder out here in Alice Springs, we are regularly getting minus temps overnight and in the mornings. brrrrrrr!

BBC California is still sitting at anchor and shipping at anchor seems to be getting worse there, let's hope it is not at anchor too long.

I already have a SPOT tracker with GEOS service so if you would rather wait to check mine out before buying one then I will have it with me for the trip to Sydney and the forum can follow along on my tracking website.

We are heading to Brisbane next Wednesday for a couple of day sso we can check on the boat etc and then we are heading down to our holiday home at Port Stephens.

Oh remember I was saying about the whale season and the dangers it brings, well here is a report from last night. They were damn lucky not to have sunk outright from this one.

Cheers

Paul

Hey Rob, when you get the web site up and running don't forget about us back here at CSR. We want updates on your web site and adventures. Also lots of pictures.
Bill.

Hi Rob,

Not sure about a group living at Rozelle bay which is just behind Darling harbour heading west. I have been in that area and have't seen a group. I have seen some yachts moored in blackwattle bay (which is where the Sydney fish markets are.

I live near a place called Avalon. Ocean on one side and and pittwater on the other so pretty handy

I would suggest when you come down from newcastle pop into Pittwater and stay at the coaster retreat(also known as "The BASIN" plenty of swing moorings to grab. Although 99% of them belong to clubs you can still pick one up that is what we do.

Barlowe: I will be here at that time for sure, thinking f putting my boat in the boatshow...going to look into it tomorrow, see if i get any offers to buy it lol Then i would just start again! Let me know when you are coming over would love to meet up and if my boat is not in the show maybe we can do some boating :)

Oldskool: Dot worry mate, I wont forget about everyone here!! I am quite a busy body and manage to keep up with multiple web projects, i will always be an active member of club searay :)

Paul: awesome thanks for the links to the lensbabies, will be getting it tonight for my uncle...dunno why i couldnt find a place to buy one but was having a hard time of it!! I have made up my mind will overnight in Pittwater on the way back home ...will be good fun for all of us! Will go to where ozzie just suggested and grab a mooring :) Have been having fun with my navionics app adding what i know of things in Sydney harbor! Dunno whats up with the California its just sitting in front of the Panama canal does not want to move lol ...kind of a traffic jam going on over there lol Thanks so much of your offer of using your spot!! I will definately take you up on that! Hey is your boat somewhere on the way down to Sydney?? Maybe we could pop in on it and check her out?

Ozzie: The picture you provided of Coaster retreat looks so nice, have mad eup my mind and will stay over there on the way down when the boat gets here :) Thats a great spot you live in :) I have friends that live just north of you near the lighthouse in palm beach :) Very talented family called the Toppanos have a beautiful house there! My cousin lives in Rozelle Bay at a marine construction yard there, he told me about that spot where there is a small community of boats where you can anchor indefinately and the authorities do not bug you. I will probably bounce around the harbor when I am on the boat and keep it Berthed where my cousin is when not onboard until i settle own into a permanent berth somewhere...

Have been busy getting everythng together, talked to aqis about the quarantine stuff...they will be calling me tomorrow to make arrangements for the dogs to come out... talked to the NSW maritime people about registering the boat, can not get it registered until it gets here as i have to have a boat code agent certify that the HIN # i am providing is authentic...was funny threy said just bring the boat to us...i was like umm cant really do that ...they said just chuck it on a trailer and bring it here.... sorry mate but this boat is not trailerable lol ...so they are coming out to the dock for 140 bucks to certify the HIN # then i can get it registered...

I was contacted by a customs broker last night...apparently yachtpath has provided a customs broker for all its clients which is handy so waiting to hear back from him about what needs to be done .... apparently all the boats ahve to be cleared by customs before the cargo ship even arrives...kinda strange, what are they going to get onboard in Port Alma and do all the clearing on the way???

Last hiccup I have run into is my boat needs an ABP "Australian Builders Plate" The maritime people were saying i need to get an Australian surveyor to survey the boat and provide me with a plate which just states capacity of how many people etc ....does this make sense? Shouldnt the builders plate provided by sea Ray suffice???

Really tired still bloody jetlag does not want to go away!! My body still thinks I am in Florida and wants to sleep on USA times which is the exact opposite of the times here ahhahah so middle of the night i am wide awake and in the daytimes sleepy as hell .sucks..should pass soon!! Miss Florida and my friends there...the weather is definately not as nice here and not digging this dark at 5pm stuff lol

Zoomed out a bit to check the Pacific side...its worse over there lol ...they have a litteral traffic jam on the ocean right now ....its rush hour and there is no escape hahah ..looks like it would be quicker to sail around the bottom of South America lol .. My guess is ships being rerouted because of piracy in the Suez canal and taking alternate routes to get around the world and jamming up this one lol Thats it lets build gunships and go pirate hunting!!!!

Panama Canal Seriously Backed Up ($hips Waiting to Pass Through)

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - More than 100 ships are waiting in the anchorages of the Panama Canal in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, waiting for a turn to pass through the "big ditch," Panama-Guide.com has learned. Some ships have been waiting for more than eight days and delays can significantly increase shipping costs. Regularly scheduled maintenance and repair work on the Panama Canal can often create backups and delays but there have been no major lane outages recently. The most recent Monthly Canal Operations Summary (February 2008) shows that the next significant lane outage is not scheduled until August of 2008. (more)
The Slots and Booking System: There are 27 slots available daily that shippers can choose to "book" ahead of time by paying a 10% surcharge above the normal fees charged to pass through the canal. Some vessels pay as much as $80,000 to pass through the canal, so by tacking on an additional 10% ship owners can guarantee their vessel will pass through more or less when scheduled. There is also one slot set aside for "auction." Ship owners who really want to get through the Panama Canal (right now) can "bid" on that one slot, and the winner goes to the front of the line. Recently one tanker carrying petroleum established a record for paying the highest price ever in history to pass through the canal, thanks to this bidding process.
Everyone Else In Line: So, that's 28 slots per day. What about the rest of the shippers who don't want to or can't afford to pay the 10% booking fee or the high fees for bidding. They are handled on a first-come, first-serve basis. And about 37 vessels (or so) pass through the canal on a daily basis. Let's do the math - if there are more than 100 ships waiting to go through and only about 10 per day taken from the line, that's about how long you are going to have to wait. And more importantly - this backlog has been building up for weeks and it does not show any signs of letting off any time soon.
Panama Canal in Surge Mode: Time is money for everyone. This is a good news, bad news story. The good news for the Panama Canal is that they have a long line of customers waiting to go through the turnstile. The bad news is that those guys are losing money by having to wait. So, the ACP kicks into a kind of surge mode. They advertise they currently have the capacity to put 42 ships through the canal every day. In reality they normally and routinely manage to average about 37 per day or so over the long haul. Little things screw them up - like a traffic jam or a demonstration or something and the pilots can't get over to Colon via the highway so they have to go on the water - which can cause a delay of hours. And those little delays add up until you've got 100 ships sitting in the anchorage.
Most Of You Are Oblivious: The Panama Canal exists, ships go through, what's for lunch? (As in, who cares?) In fact the Panama Canal generates millions and over time billions of dollars of income for this country. The world's economy is steadily expanding, and much of that trade passes through the Panama Canal. Right now the backups and delays are being discussed within the shipping industry newsletters and among the managers of the Panama Canal, and in reality it's an issue for the International Shipping and Maritime industry. The rest of you can go back to sleep. I thought you just might like to know what's going on.
Average Canal Water Time: As soon as a ship gets into the anchorage it's considered to be in the waters of the Panama Canal. In perfect conditions and when everything is working like a greased wheel a ship can come sailing straight in from the open ocean, have everything lined up in perfect order, and whisk right through the canal in about 15 hours. That's about as fast as it gets. Normally it takes longer, about 24 to 30 hours total time from arrival to being out the other side. The managers of the Panama Canal keep stringent account of transit statistics, and when there are ships waiting for as long as eight to ten days in the anchorage the "Average Canal Water Time" statistic goes up significantly. Right now it's around 44 hours - which is really "bad" in the eyes of the canal's managers. They want that number down in the mid 20's or so. Recently it's been over 50 hours due to this backup.
No Relief in Sight: The ACP keep cranking the ships through the canal but as soon as those are gone they are replaced by new ships coming in from both sides. This backup has been going on for weeks, it's only cause is a high demand from shippers, the Panama Canal is working at its fullest capacity, but the backlog and delays continue. One more note - I want to be clear that I am in no way criticizing the way the Panama Canal is being managed - I'm simply reporting on an event which is occurring (so don't shoot the messenger.) Those ACP guys can be tough sometimes (as in - Tony Soprano.) They jealously guard their "we're doing a better job than the gringos" routine. Yeah sure, we know, and we're proud of you. Now, get back to work - tho$e $hip$ are waiting.Copyright 2008 by Don Winner for Panama-Guide.com. Go ahead and use whatever you like as long as you credit the source. Salud.

Alnav: Thanks so much for posting this!! I was dying to know what was going on and figured this can not be normal! Wow this is a very serious problem, how are they ever going to fix it...the ships keep coming and there is no way for them to get ahead of the backlog... looks like a disaster for the shipping industry!! It then will trickle down onto all of us with it costing the shipping companies much more because the ships take 10 days or so longer the freight forwarders will pass the cost onto the consumers with higher prices for the shipping. Which in turn will force people selling the goods to raise their prices... in the end its you and I that will pay the price for this mess! They really need to do something about those damned pirates, before them there were 2 ways to reach the other side of the world without going around the infamous capes which can take weeks longer and be very treacherous... Now with the Suez canal and Gulf of Aden being too dangerous to transverse everyone is headed to Panama and I dont see it easing off unless the pirate threat ends!! Well that is my take on it anyways..Totally crazy situation which in the end will make it home to all of us one way or another!

Buying this boat has been such an interesting process, i have learned so much and seen and looked into so many things i would have never noticed otherwise like this whole Panama canal issue! What an amazing life and learning experience this has been !! So many crazy things have happened, all different kinds of delays and challeneges to overcome.... has amounted to sooo much more than just buying something and having it shipped home but is more like this giant test and life is going to throw every curve ball possible at me and force me to make that swing lol Yachtpath still has not issued me the approx 10 k they owe me for the vessel size change, this all makes me wonder if the shipping company is going to bounce the price up on Yachpath because of this and then they will turn around and use that as a reason not to issue the difference to me .i doubt they can do that but so many strange twists have occured who knows....hmmm only time will tell!! i wonder what other strange and unusual things are going to arise yet over the course of the rest of this experience!! Well it looks like I will not be seeing my boat anywhere near its predicted arrival time now! As long as it eventually gets here right lol

Thanks again Alnav really appreciate you posting this for us!

Rob, there is a project underway to add 2 new locks alongside each existing lock. That won't exactly triple the through-put but will greatly reduce the wait time if not eliminate it. Also, China has offered to build a cargo railway across Columbia with new port cities on each end to trans-ship cargo and rival the canal; that would be a most interesting development.

Alnav : ah so they are working on fixing it as we speak ! That's one he'll of a big project! Saw a documentary on the making of the Panama Canal once it was pretty amazing! The China idea is an interesting project lol instead of sailing the ships all the way across have them offload onto trains and other boats pick their cargo up on the other side. Sounds like that could turn into a security nightmare lol that would be very interesting to follow if it did happen!!

I didn't even realiZe the date on the article! I guess it's not talking about right now buy a similar back up is happening! The reason I thought the backup may be due to rerouting because of piracy concerns is one of the ships I was supposed to be on and never arrived was rerouted because of that and I'm guessing it's happening to others as well!

This is going to be a significant delay Rob unless they had already factored in this delay? They must have something happening because even the traffic that was in the canal last night was not moving and were at anchor.
