I now change my bet to: You got another bad transmission. Whatever is wrong with them, they probably get pulled from a boat, sent back to the factory, repaired as best they can, then sent back out. Especially if it were warrantied, I can see them replacing one that had your problems with another that did but had supposedly been repaired. If nothing else, that could make you think it wasn't their fault after all. This is just going on too long. I can't imagine fixing everything on an engine and still getting transmission noise.
Have you tried the trick where you listen through a screwdriver? Use caution around moving parts, but, place the tip of the screwdriver or other such device on areas suspected of making noise. You can listen with your hand, or better yet, your ear. You will be able to pin-point the area from where the noise is originating. I guess the dealer has the boat now, and they know tricks like that, but I'm guessing that you got another bad tranny. Maybe they really have to mate well in your boat (engine/transmission).

I know I suggested this before and I realize with hourly mechanics rates it is not a cheap suggestion but after 38 days..............
From reading the thread the starboard running gear is fine. You now have second port transmission that may or may not be good. But you have a good trans on the starboard gear. You could either put the starboard trans on the port engine and see if the problem is still there - if it is then it would rule out the trans. Or put this new port trans on the starboard engine - if ir runs good your new trans is fine - if the noise is suddenly there then it would seem to be trans.
Been there trying to diagnose a mystery engine problem on one engine (or rather paying a mechanic to). Gotta say it is disappointing to hear of the lack of support from Sea Ray on such a new boat.

Hello Hans, I've been following your thread as I'm having similar issues. My craft is much older and obviously far past anyone elses responsibility (warranty that is) so I'm left finding the problem myself and flipping the bill. I don't have any answers for you but I can tell you my situation.
Back in late June I thought I hit a log and broke something within my port motor. After examining the running gear there was no sign of contact. I've since pulled the motor and rebuilt it as there was a distinct rat-a-tat-tat sound coming from the front end. Turns out it was all for nothing as after reinstalling the motor I have the same exact sound. All my "experienced" boating friends including a certified Mercruiser mechanic said the motor was the problem, namely because the transmission shifted smoothly into forward and reverse and no visible impact damage. It now appears the sound is originating from the thin plate that covers the lower half of the bell housing. My instinct is telling me there is something not right within the trans causing this vibration and knocking sound. Did you not say somewhere that the noise was gone when you ran the motor without the trans? It's hard to believe after changing the tranny that you still have the noise. Seems we are doing the same thing from opposite ends, something just doesn't add up and I feel your pain. I just finished a two week vacation with mine and limped around with only starboard power. It tested my skill while navigating into dockage and mooring sites but I decided to not let it ruin my holiday. Slow and steady with plenty of liquid medication and I was just happy to be on the water.
I hope you find your problem and that Sea Ray or somebody ponys up to responsibilty. Hang in there. :thumbsup:

Sure hope Sea Ray throws THEIR resources at it, and SOLVES it!
I know it's of little consequence, but I truly do feel for you. There just is no other way to put it -- What a frickin' nightmare! Sick to your stomach, nagging headache type nightmare!

I was going to suggest taking all your paperwork and stuff down to Knoxville. Glad SR is now involved. May want to suggest they look at your thread here.

Keep the faith my friend. Sounds like you now (finally) have the factory reps involved.:thumbsup:
It may take them seperating the engine and tranny, run the engine to isolate the noise. That way you would be 100% sure if the cause is tranny or engine.

despite your frustration, I'd consider this as another good news. It indicates that the solution is around the corner. Have they never knew about this it would take them much longer to figure it out. Let's keep the fingers crossed now.
