I'm not exactly known for my tact - I tend to call 'em as I see 'em.

As I said, it seems the inmates have taken over the asylum. Some of those inmates post wrong or even dangerous information. Another poster, who has perhaps less tact than even I do, comments on things like that. Inmates get upset, provoke things further...and here we are.

Even well respected posters come under attack. Some posters, myself include, decide to take a break from posting...and things go further downhill.

I'm not "amazed", I'm saddened. I've flow a CSR Burgee for the last few years, attended all of the Baltimore get-togethers, even shared an adult beverage or two with you.

It's your site. Don't assume you know my motives, just go ahead and ban me if you want me gone. Sideways insults are beneath you.

Say what?:wow:

Call'em like you see them then.

CJ, Stick around my friend. Your an original SRO outcast like me and when we had no where to go... Jim let us in. I think there are alot of other REALLY crappy boat sites out there. This is still the best SEARAY site around. Don't leave. Brian

If you wrote this, yes:

And to the poster that said I let anybody join the forum because I want them to be a customer of BOE Marine. Huh? Club Sea Ray is free for anybody to join. Whether they are a customer of my company or not. The two are not related whatsoever. The only thing my company even uses this site for is some banner ads and shopping links that are non-intrusive. I don't even have a link in my signature.
Wasn't talking about the joining, more about the banning...it seems some of the trolls have been given a very long leash in the past. Maybe that is finally changing.

And to be clear, when I say "Troll" I mean someone that provides wrong, useless or downright dangerous information, or no information at all. Non-Sea Ray boat owners answering specific questions that they do not know the answer to fall into this catagory as well.

Again, calling 'em as I see 'em.

That same poster was also in amazement that we allow trolls to join the site. Well, I do not have my own personal CIA that profiles everybody on the internet and can pick out the trolls to disallow them on the site. Not possible. What I can do is delete them or ban them when they show themselves which we do often. Its usually the same few folks logging in froma hotel or library or some IP I can't delete. Its amazing that losers like this exist. But they do.
Fair enough, I've moderated on other forums myself and know how hard it is to keep ahead of a determined troll. But again, it wasn't "amazement" - it's sadness that this is what CSR has become. SRO died at least in part because the person running it got tired of dealing with the trolls. CSR is sliding downwards (IMHO) because too light a hand has been taken, or the wrong targets have been identified.

And "Scottzzzy", maybe you should read what the Tiki Bar forum says:

Shoot the bull with fellow CSR members, non boating discussion. No political posts!
Besides, it's a bit hard to go boating when the windchill is single digits and the boat is on the hard. But hey, feel free jump right in with a stupid comment!

CJ,
I really don’t understand why you keep saying that CSR is going downhill. Maybe it is not the same “good old boys club” the original members had when it first started. It has evolved into a much more robust group of boat owners, well maybe mostly boat owners. I think that is something to be very proud of and does not show any signs of dying at all. You can’t control all, and you can’t moderate all either. What you can do is hang around, interject when you feel like, laugh at the stupid stuff, offer good advice, and ignore the bad.

Happy New Year and have a safe boating season.

You guys are WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY to serious about this....You need to find another site to visit for Non-boating related items.....That seems to be the jumping off point for the down-turn. All too many times the digression occurs from non boating topics....Find something else to do to pass your time. If you are brave enough to post in "tiki-bar", etc don't be afraid of scrutiny and sarcasm that you may receive.
Provide accurate helpful information in correct spots or don't post.
That's my $0.02!
Jim...Thanks for all you do

I’m also mad at Jim. He caused me great pain.

See, I had a lot of work to do yesterday but because of this forum I had to spend time reading and replying to various posts. This got me behind in my work so I had to stay up late getting my work done. When I stay up late I need a cup of milk to get to sleep. Then because of the milk in the middle of the night I had to go pee. When I got up to go pee I was so tired I missed the toilet bowl. So my wife does not get mad at me I needed to turn on the light to wipe up the floor with my wife’s shower towel. Turning on the light ruined my night vision. When I was returning to bet, unable to see due to my ruined night vision I stubbed my toe on the corner of the bed post. Now my toe is causing me pain.

Jim made this forum so clearly its Jim’s fault. Darn you JIM!!!

And to be clear, when I say "Troll" I mean someone that provides wrong, useless or downright dangerous information, or no information at all.

CJ – let’s change it. Here, I’ll start out with 10 boating performance improvement ideas:

10) Add some stones to the bottom of your anchor locker so you are boating downhill

9) If hot women in bikinis are riding on your bow, go fast so you get to my anchorage sooner

8) To clean your flame arresters, leave them in place and shoot carburetor cleaner thru them and into your carburetor. The junk that shoots out of the flame arrester will burn up in the engine. A winglass bird taught me that one. (edit: wow I had to mispell winglass so you could see it. Hmmmmm)

7) To reduce onboard weight remove your compass. With the GPS no one uses the compass anymore anyways.

6) If you have radar you are allowed to go as fast as you want in all restricted visibility conditions.

5) If you need to call for help on the VHF make sure you start the sentence with “Hey Piggys” or “Squids” or some other insulting words to get their attention.

4) You can get to your destination faster if you stay on plane up to the no-wake buoy. If you cost a bit past the no-wake buoy it’s the boats fault.

3) To further lighten your load toss any trash overboard as soon as you no longer need it.

2) Remember, you paid a lot for you boat and your time is valuable so don’t worry about your actions affecting other peoples time on the water.

1) If you have a diesel engine, that dirty fuel fouls your spark plugs fast so change the spark plugs often.

CJ, you can go to 15 different marina/service yards to get blisters fixed on the bottom of your boat and get 15 different opinions/solutions. All will say the other yards are idiots. There are many ways to successfully do lots of things in our hobby. Some might be right some might be wrong etc. Some posters may have done some things th wrong way but been successful at it, however they may have innovated a great way to do something else. So just because this person does one thing wrong and tells everybody it worked for them, but they may have lots of other great advice we should BAN them? Sounds crazy to me. I am getting tired of trying to expalin this stuff to you guys. 95% of the troll posts in the past year have been from threads like this one that have absolutely nothing to do with anything. The forum is not going downhill, its as active as ever, lots of great info is exchanged, and lots of great technical posters exist that will usually give 10 or so responses/solutions to a question within 24 hours. As the technical discussion grows, so does the social interaction. Lots of rendezvous are arranged, and lots of people meet. As the site grows so do the number of trolls. We delete them as fast as possible. If I would follow your suggestion I would have to delete your account for starting this troll thread. What gets me is how the experienced members eat out of the hands of the few trolls we have. A troll starts a stupid thread about something, then a few experienced members say "Oh no, the forum is going downhill", which might alarm a few of the new members that they are part of a forum that is going downhill. All started by a troll to manipulate the members. My suggestion is to ignore the trolls, use the "report post" button to alert us of their appearance and the moderators will delete them. Anyway, this is another thread that will turn into a 20 pager discussing absolutely nothing. I just wanted to see why you called me out. I have a little too much class to embarrass somebody and name names which is why I didn't use your name in the reply you quoted. The name was really irrelevant, but if you want to take ownership then so be it. I think it would have been more appropriate for you to quote the comments of yours I was responding to.

As far as why SRO died. It really has become painfully obvious to me why it closed and why the owner had no desire to keep the content alive. I go through crap like this way too often. I am on the last day of my Vacation, last one was 2 years ago, and here I am dealing with this. If I ban every user that comes along with a different opinion about how to fix something, or anybody that says something wrong how fast do you think Sea Ray would want this forum shut down for pissing off thier customers? Probably instantly. Should I dare go down that path? Why would I? Too much downside with very little upside. Why would I risk this site where thousands of people happily interact simply to please a few people that want anybody with a differing opinioned BANNED? Moving forward, please be part of the solution and not part of the problem. Threads like this are the problem and like it or not are residual fallout from the work a few trolls do around here. Don't take the bait.

is this thread equivalent to picking at a scab? Things were just starting to settle down. Gary had come back and posted that someone's mechanic was and idiot...ahhh, CSR is back to normal!

Just how much snow is there in NJ?

Thanks again Jim for providing us with this forum. I for one appreciate the wealth of information I have learned here. I don't envy you and your job as it pertains to CSR! I think you are doing a fine job of guiding the site! Sorry about your vacation!

As a new comer around here I will leave you my .02....This is a very good site to gather sea ray specific information. I began boating as a child in the 1940's. but this is my first sea ray. That old saying "you can't fix stupid" comes to mind at times. Trying to control all the posts on this or any other public forum is impossible. Let the market place of ideas select whats valid and whats not. In summery-I think this site is well run-no major surgery required...
