Does anyone use a particular type of zipper lubricant? I do not want to use something which will eventually gum-up. I have heard of rubbing zippers with a candle, but I believe there is a product made which works better then a candle

WestMarine carries a product that has teflon in it. You apply, work the zipper/snap, and wipe off. I did this once about 6 months ago, and it is STILL working great! The $5 is small in boating dollars.

I second the Snap-Stick stuff, boat actually came with a free tube of it, works great.

I use the Starbrite Snap & Zipper Lubricant - since it's a gel type product I was worried about it collecting dust but so far so good.

Try Pledge spray. It works instantly and doesn't gum up like wax based products. Avoid spraying the canvas though, it might stain if there is overspray. Used it for 10 years with good results although monthly re-application may be necessary if the zipper is exposed to weather..
Good luck!
