Hi
I've had a 21ft 215 docked on the mystic river (fresh/brackish water). The 215 had an alpha drive. We usually go out through the harbor on weekends (salt water). I've always use zinc anodes and I haven't needed to replace them in 3 years. There's no damage to the drive either.

I just got a 280DA with bravo 3's. I'll be docking it on the river as well but I'll be in salt on weekends. Should I contuine to use zinc anodes? I've read that the stainless steel props on the bravo 3 somehow reacts differently than an aluminum prop in water where it attracts electrolysis.

What do others use In a mixed use environment?

With the BIII you should be using aluminum anodes. We are in the same environment, tidal River water that is salt at low tide and fresh at high, and actually boating in salt.

The earlier BIII did not have an anode on the prop shaft. Boat zincs.com sells a replacement outer prop nut that will support the installation of a prop anode. Well worth the expense if your drives do not support the OEM prop shaft anode.

I second the suggestion of aluminum anodes. I am on the Delaware River, which is tidal and brackish, more salt the farther downriver you go toward the ocean. I had been using magnesium anodes. I went through a few years of trying to figure this out, and there were several thing this board helped me figure out that really helped. 1. Don't just ask on this board, ask as many people as you can who have your drive/setup in the same area and get their experience. 2. Make sure the grounding system is fully tied together, there is a kit from MerCruiser to replace all the little wires on the outside of the drive that get broken off. 3. Use Navalloy high quality anodes. Collectively, these things made a huge difference in my situation. Good luck.
