The operating manual for a ZF 280 has listed SEA 30, 40 and 10W-40/ 15W-40. Any reccomendations for the Annapolis area?

I have 63 iv v drives and can take all the oils you mentioned. I run Atf and am thinking about synthetic it runs much cooler and is also recommened(ck amsoil web site). Synthic may be a waste of money though since if you change trans fluid every year. I also change the filter.

ZF has since updated their recs and they prefer straight 30wt for almost all temps you will encounter in the states. They go on to say that 15W-40 'will work', but they really don't recommend the multi-viscosity oil for the gears.

I have run Shell Rotella 30W in my 03 420 DA's ZF 280 Series IVs for the last two years and change it annually. I posted my spring recommissioning notes a couple dayes ago in the Sport Yacht section. That post talks to cleaning the filters in the ZF 280 Series IVs. With the right tools it is not hard. After 165 hours of use last year the Rotella 30W I pumped out of my trannies was still a dark honey brown color with no ferrous metal present in the filters.
All good.
