ZF Hurth Transmission fluid question

I was at autozone today looking for some Dexron III fluid and the clerk said Dexron III is no longer available and that Dexron VI is the replacement and is completely compatible as a III replacement. He also said to be careful about using synthetic as it tends to gum up pretty bad and or cause leaks.

Have any of you heard this? If so what is the recommended fluid to use when changing the tranny fluid?

It ain't the same. What he said works for cars, but, ZF says the new stuff is too slippery for their marine gears and transmissions. I went through the same thing and eventually called them.

You don't want to use synthetic. It's too slippery and too thin. I use Castrol Transmax dex/mec with good results.

The previous owner used this and I plan to change the fluid this spring and continue with it.
The viscosity and friction characteristics appear to be perfect.
