Just wondering if your trans clunks? My starboard trans shifts smooth from N to Forward and also N to Reverse. No problems. The port shifts into N to forward smooth, but clunks from N to reverse. This trans I put a NEW Mercrusier damper plate in over the winter. Do both of yours shift smooth? Should I be worried? I've always had a whine from this trans also.

My starboard is like butter. The port is a new trany and plate. It clunks F&R. Not like an outdrive but noticable. Nothing to worry about. The whine is normal too. Each trany has it's own signature sound. As long as the ATF is clean and the filter has no metallic in it, it's just fine.

I tore my old trany apart to understand the inners. Very very basic. Just gears and a clutch. Really nothing in there can go wrong except the bearings that support the gears. So keep the ATF clean.

That's good I guess. It just bothers me that my friend with a 31 Searay and 36 Cruiser both sound so quiet. I pulled this tranny this winter to do a new flexplate because I had a couple broken teeth. While I was in there I replaced the damper. I figures that was it. Maybe because the port is a reverse tranny that has something to do with the damper hitting the stops on the backside. Look at the pic of the new damper vs the old. Look how much further the new one has to go before it hits the bumper in forward, vs when it's in reverse. I't's pretty close. Nevermind..They always spin the same on the motor. I'm gonna go down and align the shaft today. I did it on stands, but was told it should be done in the water after a few weeks. That trans is harder to turn by hand also. On land they were identical.

My buddies 2003 360 with 8.1s both clunk in F and R. His port also chatters at 650 rpm. At 700 it smooths out. Plugs and wires all good so no miss on the motor.

Sounds like marbles but normal. Like I said, each trany has it's own signature sound.

Both are like butter except the port rattles when going into reverse. It is also somewhat noisy when backing down with added power. This is considered normal by people I trust to provide accurate information. I've never experienced any tranny problems and they all have sounded somewhat the same.

I know all about the rattle, tune ect... It's only when shifting into reverse. Starboard is smooth either way. Port is smooth into forward and clunks into reverse. Only when it's put in gear at that moment. No rattle's. Make a distinct whine in forward also. It has always done this. I guess since I replaced a bunch of things and re-aligned the shaft it's still bothering me. I don't have 3K to try a new tranny so I guess I'll live with it. As I said my friends ZF63 is smooth as silk either way on both.
